Azathioprine Shortage

Isn't anyone else having problems getting Azathioprine? I'm out and can't find any, anywhere. My pharmacy doesn't know when, or if, azathioprine will be back on the market. My doctors only advice was to call around. The only place I haven't tried is online. Anyone got a suggestion?

I'm in WI. The last couple of months I've had to return to the pharmacy to pick up the rest of my script, as they didn't have it all when I ordered it. This time, they just said there is a nationwide shortage and didn't know when or if it would be resolved. I tried the Walgreen's and Walmart's that are close, nothing.

Yes! I'm in Oklahoma and there is a shortage of the name brand version, Azasan. My son's doc has always said name brand only for this drug, but we may have to take the generic until this shortage ends.

The Pharm may be able to get the name brand Imuran version but I know my insurance will object. They can also get generic, just not the Azasan brand he's been on for years!

Any quality issues with taking the generic? Generic has to be better than none at all, right?

My partner takes this medication. We have had trouble getting it filled for the past several months in Indianapolis, IN, Washington, DC/NoVa, and Tampa, FL and have had to drive to as many as NINE pharmacies just to get one prescription filled.

As a heads-up to everyone who takes this:
Azathioprine (generic) is no longer being manufactured. What exists now is all there is going to be. I received this information from a Careplus pharmacist in Tampa, FL. If your insurance will pay for brand-name (ours will not) you have that option or you should begin to consider switching to a different medication.

If you aren't having a shortage in your area yet it's probably because a pharmacy had a bit of a stock-pile or there aren't as many people pulling from that pharmacy's supply. Heads up though! It's going to become harder to get if your area isn't out already.

I found this report as well. It isn't quite inline with what the pharmacist told me...but I wonder if maybe she meant that the manufacturer of the active ingredient had stopped making it, not the manufacturer of the medication.
