Have any of you seen this article at HuffPost written by Rebecca Kaplan regarding IBD? It was in my newsfeed yesterday. It has a link at the bottom of the article to a petition to ask the president to place IBD on a "Social Security Compassionate Allowance List" of illnesses in order to expedite SS disability benefits for those with the disease. I looked at the petition and there are very few signatures. I hadn't heard about
it until now.
The article:

It was a well written article and it is easy to sign the petition. I encourage everyone to consider signing it. Here is a link to the petition: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/urge-social-security-administration-add-crohn’s-disease-ulcerative-colitis-its-compassionate/hKmNg13f

I've signed the petition and have had others sign it as well. Really hope they get the signatures.

oh wow! I didn't see this and just copied it from the Ulcerative Colitis board! I am going to go and delete my post!
I encourage everyone to sign the petition. A lot of signatures are still needed before any action will even be considered

My understanding is that there is a list of diagnoses that fall under "compassionate allowance" and with these diagnoses it is a little easier to obtain SSD. It is not a change in the law, only adding IBD to the list of illnesses to fall under compassionate allowance. I don't need it now either, but I agree that it would be comforting to know it is is out there if I ever become disabled. For now, my work is the one thing that keeps me getting out of bed and sane!

Keep the political commentary to yourselves. I will lock the thread if it doesn't stay on topic.

Thank you Family Guy! How about
locking out Rango instead of the whole thread? This is an important petition and it would be good for folks to know about
it. Rango seems to be the only one with political commentary. Thanks

Brelaxed, after I edited Rango's posts, I edited your references to them. The thread would have been pretty disjointed with only one side of an argument.

I'm considering signing this, but I don't know if it's the best solution for what Crohn's and UC patients need. We know that Crohn's can be mild or severe, and we know that crippling flares can suddenly happen. Thus, we need a streamlined process for those times. Certainly many can't wait months for a decision. But how can we just put Crohn's on a list intended for those who are clearly expected to only worsen, and worsen so rapidly? Cancer is listed, but only if it metastasized and the patient is not expected to survive. Just having a Crohn's diagnosis is not enough evidence for a disability that prohibits work. It could be mild. So, I think it would be better to have laxer requirements on the bowel disease listing for Social Security, as it is currently extreme, and a convening of minds is needed to see if there is any way to expedite the process for IBD patients with life-threatening complications.
