Healing your gut with Diet II

So, one of the questions asked is - do you think diet alone can heal IBD......... etc, etc, etc

No.

Simple and concise. it's a bit of chicken and egg syndrome. Which came first the gut flora or the disease. The point is no one knows. Unless the whole world wide population was tested on their gut flora and then those who go on to develop IBD are retested to see where difference comes in. People can make reports and studies back whatever view they want, all you do is agree with ones that support your view and discount the ones that don't.

Everyone has to find what works for them. In my case I can't take pro or pre biotics as have tried many various forms and types and wasted many hundreds of ££££s on them and stuck with them for ages and all made me sick as a dog and terrible stomach cramps and pain. Conclusion - my body doesn't do healthy stuff! so I'll go and stuff myself with a few custard creams now.

Looking for answers to my SCD trials (any advice from intelligent folks here):
Diagnosed UC at 18 yrs old in great fitness/health (maybe not with UC). Avid sports enthusiast: running, white water canoe/kayak, snow skiing, water skiing, basketball, football, triathlons (competitive and pushing my body hard) – always wonder if that kicked me over the edge and back into flares.
First flare was blood (no real pain) in stool and treated quickly (approx. 1-2 weeks) with prednisone. This repeated itself in 3-4 year increments but prednisone dosage and length kept increasing plus added maintenance meds.
I always go into complete remission with no symptoms. Pattern being flares always occurred after some severe illness (flu, mono, food poisoning, other viruses combined with severe physical training as in running/lifting/sports/hard work/stress/loss of sleep with babies – but all attributed to illnesses).
Joined here 2003 so started learning about supplements and naturals (I never noticed healing but used them anyways as I was either in remission or flare-turned-rapidly-poor).
Realizing I would be looking at Imuran by reading posts I read “Breaking the Viscous Cycle”. I got sick again and then started diet after getting better from virus. Gut was gurgling so I was thinking maybe flare coming on again but felt confident armed with knowledge of SCD theory. Did SCD fully; 100% adherence yet continued to decline while on SCD and after 3+ weeks had lost weight (180 down to 145 lbs), hungry/tired/fever/chills - symptoms kept declining; I was hospitalized and placed on low residue diet and again recovered with steroids (IV prednisolone, other melamines). Started Imuran and Remicade and after about 2 years of remission and stabilization I tapered off Imuran and stopped Remicade and was great for a few more years. Had started VSL#3 and read the book again and realized I was having no issues with food. Would I start at chicken soup and then add what. I could eat anything I wanted (So, I just omitted ‘illegal’ foods and added per book; one at a time). I was steady then, boom! I caught another illness and was stressed and working hard around house plus pushing my body again in activities and caring for kids, etc. I started flaring and got back to chicken soup but continued to decline following SCD so followed a user named Sheldon’s diet (he touted a diet ‘cure’ on the UC forum – a variation of SCD; 'better’). His help/advice/diet did not help either. I got bad rapidly again: more Predisone>hospital>recover on low residue diet and IV steroids (still using mesalamine and VSL#3DS) until I go into complete remission.

Now 5.2 years in a remission. Remission for me is 1-formed bm each morning with no diarrhea nor mucous nor blood. Colon only shows scars where once bad flares were so those areas are sensitive and do cause some spasms (pain) but no sign of inflammation.

Question:
Am I just not cut out for help with diet, supplements or naturals?
I’ve realized I can no longer push my body. Post flare and in remission I would get excited about gaining weight and getting stronger so used to keep working harder to get faster and stronger to do more meanwhile home and work duties increased.

Now kids older and much less stress and I rest and don't train anymore.
I'm in remission 5.2 years going but reading the effects of Imuran (50mg/day) on men at 50 for increase in lymphoma and Remicade cannot last forever.

BTW: If this post doesn’t fit here just delete but wondered what you all thought.

side note: I do notice things with foods like too much vitamin C and orange juice give me mouth ulcers.
Minor other food intolerances I have stopped but I'm not inclined to try SCD again.

Would anyone here see it working based on my past? Could I even risk getting off Remicade/Imuran?

I don't know how it could work (but am wondering and open) I can tolerate almost all foods in remission I reduce amounts of some things like I can eat a small portion of dairy but a glass of milk give gas but nothing really give me issues and I rest more and try to not get sick.
