Levaquin (same category as Cipro, I think).

I just saw this today. I am NOT trying to run around warning about it being a devil drug (that would be prednisone wink ) but I thought it was interesting. I *think* it might be in the same category as Cipro (the generic names of both end the same way).

All drugs come with risks of allergic reactions or other crazy things. I do have a relative who died after Levaquin. It was not as linear as in the news story. He got the snapped achilles tendon as a result of the Levaquin, and needed surgery for it and and one thing led to another and he ended out with a spinal cord infection that caused paralysis and death. I get scared of Cipro too, but everything we take has its risks.

Levaquin is my go to antibiotic. I always have a stash on hand.

Way back long ago, I suffered permanent hamstring tendon damage from Levaquin. My older posts are gone, but there is one below that references the damage:

Levaquin is one of the last line anti-biotics like Cipro...but it seems to be much harsher than even Cipro in some people.  12+ years ago I was prescribed Levaquin for a severe infection, after a day or two of being on it, I had a severe reaction where it put me into a state of anxiety, my skin was crawling, and other mental side affects....it was horrible and stopped immediately.  At the time I worked for a computer services company that handled the IT for the company that makes it and the FDA had sequestered the company for all records regarding Levaquin.  I found that they still have it labeled safe, but added the warnings that it can (and has) cause damage to tendons, and cause mental issues.  It doesn't work for me, but it obviously does for some people...

They are in the same category type - fluoroquinolones. My daughter had to take it last year and read about the side effects, which scared her, but she really needed it. She tried to be really careful with her ankles as she already has had problems with them. She's already suffered from one drug causing more harm than good. Sometimes one man's cure is another man's bane, it seems.

It was a fluky and crazy series of events, but very tragic. I don't know that Levaquin was to blame beyond the tendon damage, but still it does make you pause and remember that everything we choose to do has it's risks...but then again, so do untreated infections and Crohn's disease.
