Hi,

In the past 2 months I've had 2 procedures to drain a perirectal abscess. I currently have 2 drains in and have been very uncomfortable since the last procedure was done. Before the drainage, I did not have any pain from the abscess. Since the 2nd drain was placed, 3 weeks ago, I'm just so done with this. I was told I will be getting the drains removed next week..back in the OR. I'm excited, but now worried that that'll be painful!! Anyone have experience with getting the drains removed?! Thank You!!

I'm literally out of the hospital for an abscess. are you referring to the Seaton? They just drained mine without anything invasive. I just have discomfort from the surgery.

Honestly, I'm not sure what a seton drain is but maybe? I have a drain that's sticking out draining anything going to the area where the abscess was. Not sure if that helps? I'm so uncomfortable with the drain in, but wondering if there's more discomfort once it's out!

It's a bit sore and obviously uncomfortable, but not really painful. You should be ok. good luck

When I had mine removed, I didn't even go under. My CR surgeon just did it in his office.

I voiced my distaste /concern for the Seaton. Luckily, they drained it rectally & without a cut. It was the best case scenario & hopefully continues to works. The pain from the abscess was insane. I did nothing but moan, cry & sometimes scream for 7 weeks.

Pardon my ignorance (I'm new to the abscess world) but why did they need to drain it if it wasn't painful?

Thanks for replies. Originally, the doctor said he was going to remove the drains in his office, but then he said I probably wouldn't be able to tolerate it (he's probably right). I have a lot of narrowing due to disease in my rectum too. So he's going to sedate me and do it in the OR.

As far as why they decided to drain it, that is a good question. I got very sick at the end of last year and all the doctors thought it had to do with the abscess. So even though I didn't feel it, they thought it was best to drain it. My gastro was up in the air about doing anything but the surgeon had no doubts. Just looking forward to getting the drain out and moving on from this!!

I had two perianal abcesses drained at the start of the year, intially it was incredibly painful and
when the nurses changed the wound packing and bandage every day it was the most painful thing I have ever
had to endure but after a week or two it began to get less painful.

I had one abcess which was very small and only left a small wound, this has now just recently
closed up, the other one is almost there as well so it had taken nearly two months to get to this
point :-) , the nurse I see regularly seemed impressed by the speed it closed up and she seemed to
think it was down to my diet.

Keep the wound ultra clean and make sure the bandage is changed regularly, it can be a bit of
a pain at times as it can sometimes interfere with your daily life but again it is important that
it is changed regularly, also make sure that the nurse cleans the area around the wound before
putting the bandage on.
