Failed Humira will Remicade work?

Humira did not work for me, Doc wants me to try Remicade next, anyone try Remicade after failing Humira, and did it work for you? Thanks!

We have had quite a few members use Remicade after problems with Humira. Some successfully, a few not...

I am hopeful to be one of these people. I have talked to people that it has been successful. Most of the time we have to try different medications till we find one that works. Sometimes it doesn't, sometimes people need surgery. Or they need to try something else. Maybe try adding something like 6mp or Methotrexate to the mix will help also.

When you say it didn't work for you, how long did you try it? What dose? What dosing frequency? Did you get your blood levels tested? Did you get checked for antibodies to it?

Some people have had success with Remicade after failing Humira, but there is a push these days to do everything you can to make the first one work before switching, because each time you switch, your odds of the new med working may go down.

I was on Humira for about 5 months, I am also on Imuran 200mg, I have been on that about 4 years and it became ineffective, that was why we added Humira. Doc has kept me on it to help the Humira along, the last month of Humira I went to weekly injections, never noticed any Change for better while on Humira if anything I felt worse!! Having so much trouble with my strictures and pain!! I did have to go on pred. For about 2 months while on Humira, strictures felt much better, but once off, stricture pain came right back! Just felt it did nothing for me. Doc thinks bc remicaid is given in much higher doses it could be more effective for me, I am still staying on the Imuran too. My lab work has looked good, didn't look like I had antibodies to it.

Did you have a follow-up colonoscopy and/or MRI/CT scan after being in Humira for a few months? That is standard protocol to do so - not just to rely on how you feel but to actually look and see how the tissue is responding.

Could it be that your strictures are mainly scar tissue? If that's the case then neither Humira nor Remicade is going to reverse that.

I do agree that it's a good idea to stay on the imuran as an adjunct to whatever else you're taking (humira or remicade).

My doc. Thinks bc the prednisone taper I was on helped with the stricture pain and when I went off the pain returned he, believes it is mostly inflammation, I did have a CT done in ER in Jan. I went in for severe pain, found on CT I had partial bowel obstruction, at that time had been on humira 2 full months, that's when I went on the prednisone. He did mention that the Humira could be helping some tissue healing, but not helping enough if I'm still having so much pain with eating. My disease mostly shows as strictures, and pain from that, I do not have diarrhea, I am mostly constipated all the time! I would be interested in having a colonoscopy to see if any healing has happened..

I had a colonoscopy a year after being on Cimzia (and a year and a half from being on the Humira). It actually did show improvement. But not enough. That might be where you are too. As soon as I would taper steroids I would flare right back up, enough to be hospitalized. So even if there is some improvement, if it's not enough then we end up right back where we started it seems.

I would try the Remicade though. I personally think it helps that it's in the IV, goes right in our system better then the injection having to absorb. I've also read more where people have been helped with it then the other meds. So fingers crossed, have to keep trying!

I started on Entyvio which is a different process than Humira, Entyvio works with protein binding on the intestines. Humira and Remicade work with TNF suppression in the cells, they both follow the same approach. I hear that Entyvio takes months to determine if it really works.

Fernando have you been on either humira or Remicaid? My doc says I have to try both before I can try Entyvio, mostly for insurance reasons. How long have you been on it? And have you felt any changes. I am suppose to start Remicaid Thursday, fingers crossed! :)
