Help With Perianal Abscess

Hey all,

I had my first anal abscess and first drainage 3 days ago. After drainage, the pain decreased substantially but the next day I felt the abscess again and the excruciating pain. After enduring the pain I think the abscess popped and began to drain as I felt a liquid substance in my anal area and the pain subsided a bit.

I was wondering if my experience is normal. Do anal abscesses, after draining, come back and drain themselves? I have been taking warm baths and anti bacterial pills called amoxiclav. I have only been taking tylenol for the pain.

Any advice and input is much appreciated. I need to recover asap so I can get back to work!

Did they not give you anything to pack it with, like gauze? With the abscesses that I have had, I would pack it at night with clean gauze. It kept it open and helped it heal from the inside out. Eventually the hole just got smaller and smaller until I couldn't fit any gauze at all.

That happened with my first abscess (no gauze given to me) and it turned into a fistula that still hasn't been able to heal 3 years later. It healed over on the outside but then filled up and burst on the inside.

I would go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for advice on gauze to get. My second abscess is when I learned about packing. They gave me super thin strips of gauze, a little wooden stick (kind of like the ones used to push back cuticles of fingernails), and sterile water. Each night, my husband would squirt the sterile water into the abscess, then use the stick to kind of twirl the strips of gauze into the hole (kind of like a fork twirling spaghetti). Then a square of gauze over it and taped down. Then in the morning we would do it again, unless I didn't have to go anywhere, then I would just lay down all day and let the air heal the abscess.

I'm like scifigal. My abscess ruptured and created a fistula, but mine is almost 5 years old.
I thought it was finally over when it ruptutred.
Aside from a 6 month break due to remicade, it's never been over.

I forgot to mention that it is beginning to itch. I do not know if that is good or bad...

Yikes. I had a fever with my abscess but do not have one anymore. At this point i am hoping it is just scar tissue but scared it is a fistula. There is no leakage so i am hopeful

I hope so. Atm, the abscess looks plump and is red. Looks like its filled with blood and ready to pop, but the pain is mild. I am just dreading going to the dr tomorrow bc i know he is going to lance it again and the procedure is so painful!

Was going to bed but felt a bowel movement. Sat on toilet but no poop; squeezed a bit and abscess popped. Only blood came out, no puss. No pain, just slight sting before it popped. I do not know if its good or bad, just scared atm. Any insight would be appreciated.

For the itching I use Prax lotion, it is a miracle lotion, it always stops itching immediately.

Prax is not a prescription, it is over the counter and needs to be special ordered, cost $40 a bottle.

I am also dealing with a fistula post abscess drainage. I did not even know it was a possibility until it happened. Taught me to ask a lot more questions. I have had an actively draining fistula for about 6 years. Heat also helps it drain. it brings the infection to the surface. I had an additional abscess this past summer and it began draining out another spot after I put heat on it for a day. I would do all you can to help prevent the fistula. They can be difficult to heal once scar tissue builds up. good luck
