I'm scared to do my humira shot because of how much it hurts

I started humira 3 weeks ago, and had to have my fourth shot yesterday. But I couldn't do it. I just can't allow whoever is giving me the shot to click it! When they're about to click I go crazy and start screaming. I know how important the shot is and how badly I need it, but I'm too scared to get it.
I have cronhs so I'm familiar with bad pain, and getting iv's are like my hobby.. But something about this shot terrifies me. I dread it so much. It hurts so badly that I don't want it.
I never want the person doing it to click because once it clicks, the needle jabs in and that's when the horrible sharp sting pain comes. I know it only last for ten seconds, but I can't do it. I know most of it is all in my head, and that I think about it way too much. But I need this shot so badly but can't allow anyone to click.
I've tried the whole "don't look at it" and "distract yourself" but it didn't work.
Please help with any advice and tips and to help me figure out what to do!!!

My mom took me to the doctors office to let the nurse do it, but when the nurse was about to click, I went all crazy and didn't let her. So I left without the shot-stressed as ever.
I don't think my problem is who's giving it to me, I just don't want to feel the pain from the shot. :(

When I took Humira I would have my husband stick the fatty part of the back of my arm. It hurt WAY less than sticking my thigh and I was never brave enough to try my stomach. It helped because 1)I couldn't see it and 2) I could watch tv and distract myself that way. But... I'd always shove a towel into my mouth and scream into it or bite down. I know how dramatic that sounds, but that's how bad it hurt me. I hated it so bad I would avoid getting my shot, so I feel for you. Can you have someone stick the back of your arm? I know the instructions don't say to use the arm but it's only because they are written for someone who has to stick themselves. My GI said it was fine to do it there. I'm sorry it's so bad for you.

Well speaking from 23 years of flaring CD with never any full remission, I guarantee you, the Humira shot doesn't hurt compared to living with CD on a daily basis...I'm so thankful Humira has helped as much as it has and I'm still not in full remission yet, I give myself the shot every 2 weeks and look forward to it and I'm not a fan of needles either but love them compared to CD.

Let it warm to room temp, try icing the area (it's recommended in the stomach or thigh) use the alcohol rub, let it dry, squeeze the area you're going to inject, place the needle at a 90 degree angel as instructed, push and hold the top button for 10 seconds (until the yellow marker in the little window rises to the middle) and you're done...didn't you get a practice pen from Humira? You should have, it's great, familiarize yourself with the clicking sound and the correct procedure and you'll be fine...it's better than being sick as a dog for the rest of your life.

Try icing the area where you are going to do the shot. I found it hurt less in my stomach than it did in the thigh.

Do you have some anti-anxiety meds? It can help to take that before the shot.

and what i do is have headphones on and listen to music.. distract you're self. don't look at the site

I found the Humira shot really painful too. My husband had to do it for me because I couldn't bring myself to press the button. Funny, I later had to inject Cimizia myself and never had an issue. Now I do the Simponi myself and it's easy as pie. That stupid Humira was pain, tho!

I also recommend icing the area beforehand. Maybe you could try some deep breathing/meditation before you get it and then during the shot? Couldn't hurt to be calmer!

I'm sorry you're having this pain and anxiety with your humira shot. I used to put ice on the spot to numb it beforehand. It didn't get rid of the pain, but it did make it feel less intense. I love the idea of putting on headphones and music. Hope you find a way to cope. Hugs

When I first started Humira about a year ago, I was shocked by how bad it hurts. During those first few months, I used to writhe in pain and scrunch my face up in agony when my hubby gave me the shot. Over time, however, I've somehow gotten much more used to it. Maybe it's because I know what's coming and I know it's going to sting, but for some reason, I am able to tolerate the shot much more easily now--it doesn't seem like it hurts quite as bad as in the beginning.

Just like with most things, in time, you grow used to it and it's not such a big deal anymore.

Humira is like a miracle drug for me, putting my Crohns into almost complete remission. So, while I had moments early on of dread and near-refusal to take the med, I'm really glad I stuck it out. I feel a million times better and I've acclimated to the pain from the shot, making it much easier, quicker, and less stressful to administer/receive. Hang in there. It gets easier.

I guess I have a high pain tolerance for needles(maybe because of all the tattoos I have?) because it just stings a bit. I do Humira pen in one leg and them Methotrxate syringe in the other leg weekly. The syringe is totally painless but the freakiness of sticking the needle in is is worse. Still I am thinking of switching my Humira to syringe since it is so pain free.

Oh yikes sani. The reward has to be better than the thought of the injection pain. I do my thigh for Humira and my stomach for methotrexate. No question the syringe is less painful and a lot quieter. But the pen is a lot more efficient. Maybe you coud take an Ativan prior to injection, it helps with the anxiety. The kind you dissolve under your tongue. It works in 10-15 mins and honestly helps with the fear. We should all lobby Abbvie to make that click either quieter or at least less scary! Good luck I really believe the Humira works.

I started Humira shots and freaked out cause I read what every one wrote. I called Humira nurse and she confirmed that the med is cold so leave it out. Well I did for half and hour and it still stung. So I tried this: I took the shot out and set the timer for 40 min. I set everything up in the bathroom and started telling myself it does not hurt. After the 40 min I took a shower to help myself calm down. After the shower I sat down pinched up alot of skin on my leg and just did it. Minor burn for a second and nothing else. Maybe its a combo of the shot at room temp, the heat from the shower and telling myself to calm down. I dont know but try different ways but #1 calm down. I was told that when you are nervous you tense up and make things worse.

I use regular needles rather than epi pen. This allows me to control speed. It's not the needle (I do daily blood thinning injections) it's the pain of the drug going in... Not all hurt but humira certainly does. Toe curling. Added problem is being so underweight finding some fat to inject into!

So perhaps try regular needles - far greater control.
