Have you seen this article? This woman's son was taken by DCFS because she uses marijuana for her Crohns. Outrageous! If you're using in a state where it's not legal, you better not tell anyone!

Wow that's stupid and backwards!! Only medical MJ is legal where I live....my kids are all grown up so I have no worries lol!

Wow, if the only reason CPS removed her son was because she possessed MJ, that is shocking. I live in NY where MJ was only just recently approved medicinally and work with young children and their families, so I am familiar with DSS and have often worked with families where children have been removed, and I can say I have never seen or heard of a child being removed because a parent possessed MJ, even though it is illegal recreationally here. Even with harder drugs - it doesn't mean the children are automatically removed, usually a case is opened and a caseworker works with the family to remedy the situation - sometimes this can get frustrating when parents are committing significant drug violations that lead to significant child neglect and the children STILL aren't removed from the home. So this whole story is really surprising to me and I have to wonder if more was going on.

Anyway, I think you're right Steph, if it's not legal in your state, keep in hush-hush until it is.

read the whole article please... 1. illegal in her state. 2. son bragged about it at school. 3. they di not just take the kid for the pot, they charged her for having it in the house in quantities that implied intent to deliver.. ( dealing). so I think that we all should wait until the whole story comes out in court, before we jump to conclusions.. ;o) very similar to (dry) counties and cities.. alcohol may be legal in a state or country but each jurisdiction has its own rules. that's our way. fight it at the polls or in court.

Randy, with all due respect it doesn't seem like you thoroughly read the article. Or you are making assumptions about what you read. 1)yes, illegal in her state, 2)son did not brag about it like, "my mom smokes weed!", but rather talked about the benefits of Mmj and how it had saved his mother's life, 3)nowhere in the article does it talk about the quantity she had on hand. And if you know anything about what sheisters the cops can be, you know they can bring a charge like that with only the smallest amount. The charge actual has very little to do with the amount. It seems like they were just trying to bring any and every charge possible.

The only conclusion to jump to here is that IF you are using MMJ to help your crohn's and it's not legal in your state, you are not safe to tell anyone, especially your kids who might naively tell someone else. I think she was stupid to tell her kid or at least not tell him to keep his mouth shut, but just because they brought multiple charges doesn't mean she's guilty of them. Let's not jump to conclusions....

Just wondering. Is there an issue with the level of impairment, and the ability to care for (ones) children?

MJ for medical reasons should be legal so it's use can be out in the open and controlled. This could help with keeping it out of the black market as well as being easier to access high quality medicinal strains. Strains with high CBD and low THC are much less likely to make someone impaired. Straight CBD helps with crohn's symptoms and possibly inflammation without causing a "high".

What I find hard to accept is that other drugs like booze cause impairment and are legal, while medical MJ is only provisionally legal in some states. I know from personal experience that growing up with an alcoholic as a parent is painful and dangerous. Opiates are the most dangerous drugs and they are legal, (some people do absolutely need them). Tobacco is legal even though it can kill the user and those exposed to lots of smoke, it's legal, and has no medicinal value.

The point is our laws should promote the well being of citizens, even the sick ones.

Opiates are only legal if prescribed by a doctor and obtained at a pharmacy. I feel like you just threw us legal narcotic users under the bus while you lamented another Crohn's patient's troubles for illegal use of marijuana. Whether you agree with it or not, her use was illegal. That means there was no doctor who prescribed it to her to make sure she does "absolutely need them".

I guess I'm from a different world. I'm not against someone getting relief from pain, but why is illegal use of marijuana treated as okay while legal use of a narcotic is almost sneered upon as the patient being an addict?

I know this - if a patient is in a position where she feels the need to use marijuana for medical purposes where it isn't legal, thereby risking legal ramifications, she needs to make darn sure to keep her son out of the loop of knowledge of her use of it, instead of educating him as to its attributes where he naively and proudly passed on his knowledge at school. Even if she had told him to keep it to himself, it would have been unfair to place that responsibility on a child. I would have stayed in Colorado where she was living prior if I had that strong a need for it, or would have stopped it and used something else legally. I would not have gambled on that risk with my child.

I'm sure I just ticked some of you off. Oh well.

Since mj has a medical effect I think it should be legal everywhere especially since booze is and it has no medical benefit the way mj does (I know all about red whine, blah blah blah) although it's just as dangerous to be driving under the influence of booze and mj, many RX drugs are too and some people still drive under any influence, so that's not what should be focused on, what should be focused on is, you can only get so high on mj and when it comes to booze you can get totally wasted and risk your life and innocent peoples lives as well. And at least mj provides medical benefits.

I don't sneer at anybody who takes narcotics, but their legality does not make them somehow better, safer or less addictive than illegal drugs. My main point is that there no way on earth marijuana should still be illegal; there is no justification for it either other than a fabricated, hypocritical 'morality'.

I do agree with you that the woman in this case probably shouldn't have told her 11-year-old son, but that doesn't make what happened to her remotely right. She would have to beat her son black and blue and bring different men home every night to be a worse parent to her son than the state will be; sorry, but it's true.

So sorry if I offended anyone. People who are in pain should be able to have access to what they need for relief without having a stigma attached.
