Entyvio or Ostomy?

I have been on humira once a week and prednisone for two years. I still have a lot of inflammation in my colon. I have D several times a day and at night. Medicaid is no longer wanting to cover the cost of humira so my disease is only going to get worse. My doctor does not want to try me on remicaide because he thinks it is too similar to humira. He doesn't want to try me on any other biologic, saying it wouldn't be any better than humira. He wants to put me on entyvio once I get married to my fiancee and get on his insurance.
My problem is that if I get on entyvio there will be an out of pocket expense of 10,000 dollars each year!
How can anyone afford that?? Is it time for me to just consider an ostomy? Wouldn't that be cheaper in the long run?

Well I disagree with your doctor. I tried Humira and Cimzia and they both failed. Now I'm on Remicade and it's actually working really well. I'm combining it with Methotrexate injections and it's really helping. So I think it's worth trying the others until you find one that works for you.

If you have an ostomy you will still need to be on medication. An ostomy is not a cure. While your symptoms may be concentrated in your colon right now, Crohn's can manifest itself anywhere along the digestive tract, and commonly does so in the small intestine. So an ostomy may provide you some relief and maybe even remission (it did for me), but you will have to remain on medication to prevent the symptoms from returning.

As far as medications, you should definitely try Remicade. Just because Humira is not working doesn't mean Remicade won't. As mentioned earlier, all these drugs have patient assistance programs. You need to look into them and see how much they can save you. As for Entyvio, I have been on it for a year and am doing well. It is so new that the only data on it are the clinical trials, which studied a few hundred patients at most, and did show better results for UC than Crohn's. However, with such a small patient sample I would consider the data just a start. There is much to learn about it. Doctors already are learning new things, such as that it takes a long time to start working, but that it is showing promise as a maintenance drug.

I appreciate the advice. I will definitely Keep asking my doctor why I can't just try remicaid first.
