burnt smell?!?

Does anyone out there know /experience this symptom?  It's back, and I can't wrap my brain around this.  What's the deal with the "burnt" smell with bm's?  I was originally dx'd with IBS with d, about 6-7yrs ago.  Had smell then occasionally too.  Then we dx'd me as having proctitis & colitis of the lining.  Now we're waiting for blood test results to verify crohn's, I get results the 18th of this month.  I've had every oscopy there is, some more than once.  I have history of polyps as well.  I've been sick so long, I don't remember what it feels like to take a ride in the car without pain... now the smell is back this morning, worse than ever before!  What the heck does this mean?!? Does anyone out there know?

I have never experienced this w/ my CD but I would def call your doc. I'm sorry you're going through this! Have you had a capsule endoscopy done? My doc's all thought I had UC until I had a capsule endoscopy. Sorry for your burnt smelling poo! Call your doc!

I am wondering if it is related to what you have eaten?  Alot of people can tell by their poo smell what foods they have eaten and each person describes different smells according to your point of reference.

Please do ask you physician.

Kitt, My poop smell directly correlates to how I'm feeling or will shortly feel.  I've almost got them down. LOL

I'm sorry Fire, I've never had the burnt smell.   I'd love to know what it is if you find out though.

I agree with MishBall...I can tell what's coming. Usually when things start smelling funky (possibly a build up of bacteria or unseen blood in the stool). My father died at home of a massive abdominal hemmorage due to prostate cancer. When things get rough for me, that smell, the smell that was in his house, the smell of blood and death is how my bowels smell. It's pungent and a sweet burnt smell. I know this is a terrible corralation to make but that's what it smells like to me. Call you GI...sounds like you may at least need to do some stool smears at home .... just to be sure.

I had a feeling, I use to get the smell several years ago, but can't remember what/if anything came after..Yep, just had the capsule endoscopy, that's why the Prometheus Serology 7 blood test, which doc said will make it difinitive.  No more trying to heal with a bandaid.  This way, he'll know with 92% certainty what's going on where, and he can get me on the best treatment.  I started at the colitis forum several months ago, but since coming here, I feel like most of you experience symptoms the same as mine.  Not that the other forum didn't, just not quite the same, I see alot of you are crohn's/colitis.  I feel like that best describes me!  I regret that any of us has to be here, and feeling so bad.  I get the time change here, and this week has got me all screwy too....maybe a connection?  Some people explain the smell as "an electrical charge"...Anyhow, I see doc on the 18th, and I will ask him, unless it manifests itself sooner & I figure it out on my own...I promise to post, when I do see him....so far as the oscopies show...I've got proctitis/colitis of the lining/and now the 2 new spots in small intestines, one at the terminal ileum, the other further in, and spreading.  I also noticed that this week I've lost my appetite again, and I was doing so good for awhile!  Not that I couldn't stand to lose about 60 pounds, cause I could, just not this way...starving... nono ..anyhow, thank you all for being here for me & each other!  It's a Huge help just knowing I can come here & get the understanding I definitely DO NOT get here!!!!!!!(home)

That is so weird, my boyfriend tells me that in the morning times, my D has a "burnt" smell to it! I never really notice b/c I guess I am used to it. But my dr. has checked a "sample", if you will, several times, I just recently had a CT Scan, blood work, and a lower GI done, and nothing abnormal was found.

It is interesting to know that someone else has a "burnt" smell too though. Let me know if your dr. says anything, i'm interested to see if others have this issue.

Yes! I thought this was so weird, but every once in a while I notice a distinct smell like something burnt, or the quality of charcoal...? I only get it rarely and I have never focused in on whether it's in good times or bad. I will make sure and post again to this thread when I have it next.

I seem to go by smells too. This may sound weird, but some smells are naturally pleasing and I can tell if it's going to be a good day or bad.

Anyone have problems with going back and forth between D and constipation? I seem to oscillate between the two. Particularly right now I am a little stopped up cause I just started Humira. Anyone else have this problem and if so do laxatives work for you?

Nice to hear I'm not crazy.

yep, as it turned out, I had a painful morning & ended up on extra meds for the pain all day!   It's wierd, cause my brother said his does the same thing somtimes, but he's not been dx'd with anything, tho he is younger than I, there's still time for his body to turn on him too, and this is just one clue.  I use to notice the smell years ago, when I first started "complaining" to my old doc about this stuff & he dx'd me with IBS.  Back then I'd get constipated, then get d.  I had both issues then.  All of this stuff is hereditary in my family.  Gramma had intestinal surgery, colon polyps, colitis/crohn's.  Have an uncle that had adhesions that went all the way through (colon?), and he spent a month in the hospital.  The other one had divirticulitis.  Had surgeries & is fine now. 

So far this morning, I haven't gotten my system woke up yet, we'll see how it goes for me today.  I'll keep posting progress, and stick close to this forum, but I share puter with mother-in-law that likes to play games all day,.  So until she moves in future, my puter time is early am...this site just helps me cope better, I'm very glad you're all here, though I wish it was for another reason...TY.  Here's to a good/better day for us all!

Sometimes I notice what I would describe as the smell of hair permament chemicals. I guess you could describe that as a "burnt" smell.

I have this problem too but my diagnosis and understanding of my ibs-c is new. I tend to notice that this symptom usually happens after feeling that low dull pain I get in my intestines and then I hit the bathroom and feel better. I have 1/2 dose of miralax daily and generally only experience this once a week as if its the weekly culmination of everything wrong in my body escaping with vengeance.
