Has anyone had trouble with Prednisone and thier teeth?

 My teeth keep breaking every time I take prednisone, any advise?

prednisone blocks absorption of calcium, hence if you're on it for a while you can develop osteoporosis or osteoppenia. i never had any problems with my teeth until i got on prednisone. then i started to get cavities. my brother and sister, who have never been on prednisone, dont have any cavities. it makes sense cos calcium is needed for bones AND teeth. so start taking a calcium supplement with vitamin D right away.

I've been on prednisone long term. At this point I am steroid dependent and probably will never be off it entirely. I do have osteoporosis and have had some compression fractures. I can break a rib by sneezing. I do lots of things to help my bones and they have gotten better over time. However, I have never had any issues with my teeth. I see my dentist every 6 - 7 months and have not had a single cavity in over 20 years.

I have never had any problems at all with my teeth. It has been more than 10 - 15 years in between my dentist has got some work with me. And the work has just been minor. But since 07, when my disease hit in at a serious level, my teeth have almost constantly needed repair, three in a row with a few months in between, one later on the same year and so on.....in 5 years I just have used LDN for 5 - 6 months in all. I also think it's the disease itself making my teeth weaker now than before. / BEE

There's a lot of different things that could happen and cause your teeth to become weak and break. Prednisone is a possible culprit due to it decreasing the amount of calcium that you can absorb through your intestines. As a result, your body will leach its calcium requirements from your bones and also from your teeth. I took a Calcium supplement - 1800mg while I was on Pred and vitamin D.

Also, vomiting from this disease can cause you teeth to be bathed in acid which erodes the enamel (kind of like soda and orange juice). That causes your teeth to become more brittle and more sensitive.

Another extremely likely culprit is a lot of the medications that we take - 5-ASA meds, antidepressants, pain meds, Entocort, even Benadryl causes dry mouth as a side effect. Saliva provides a very important function of buffering your mouth after eating (acid in your mouth from food and drinks can cause cavities) and remineralizing teeth by replacing minerals that are lost while eating. When you don't have enough of it, your teeth become brittle and prone to decay.

I've had it pretty bad from Entocort and Colazal. I use a mouth rinse called Biotene to rinse with and it helps keep the oral cavity moist. It has some protiens in it that are close to human saliva. Honestly, it works pretty well. There's also a spray from the same company that can be used when you're not using the mouth rinse. There's also a product called OraMoist that's a tablet that stick to the roof of your mouth/side of your cheek and will make you salivate all day. I have not tried that because I can't find it. I stick to Biotene, sugarless gum, flossing 2x/day and brushing 3-4x/day. Also, I avoid Listerine as that will further dry out your mouth.

Though if your teeth are breaking, i'd highly, highly recommend you see your dentist...

I had to take high dose prednisone (60 mgs,/day) in 2007 for treatment of legionaire's disease and pneumonia. I took it for almost a year. Over the past 2 years I have experienced continuing tooth breakage to the point where I only have 10 teeth left. Anybody have any similar ptoblems?

Calcium, Vit K and D3 and Lysine which improves absorption, and in general is a great idea for those with compromised immune systems.

I highly recommend grabbing Solgar VM75 formula multivitamins and a Lysine supplement.
