Has anyone ever had eye problems with having crohns? It thought I had pink eye but the medicine they gave didnt help at all. My eye swelled up and was very red, felt like sand paper was scratching it and it keeps watering...I believe I am having a flare up with my crohns, so I am guessing this has something to do with my eye...Ive been reading up on it and it does say if i have a defficiency of vit A, this could happen....its' called dry eyes...has anyone ever had this happen to them? If so, what did you do to help it? thanks
ps. Ive had crohns for 25 years, this has never happened to me

Does it seem to be any of those?
Are you having problems with both eyes or just one? Is there any pain? You should probably let your GI know and probably see an ophthalmologist.

I get this too when I am flaring badly!
It looks like a bunch of broken blood vessels in my eye, and just as described feels like sandpaper.
The eye drops help. Just the lubricating stuff, not the stuff to take the red out.
When your crohn's is better it should clear up.

Are you sensitive to light? It could be uveitis, just based on the redness and the odd watery feeling. I've had that a ton. I saw an optometrist and they dilated it (it is intense but it helped immediately) and gave me some special drops.
I've had dry eyes my whole life. A couple of suggestions:
1. Systane High Performance eye drops. I live by them.
2. Omega 3D fish oil supplements. It's supposed to promote eye health.
3. Systane also has a gel you can put on at night before you go to bed.
But I stand by those eye drops. I hope your eyes get better!

During this last flare I ended up having uveitis four times. I'd see the dr and he would give me prednisone eye drops and older the taper finished it would come back. Since being on entocort and starting back on the 6mp for 3 months, I haven't had an issue (knock on wood). I had never had my crohns affect my eyes until this last flare. For me uveitis didn't involve severe pain or the terrible light sensitivity but the eye dr diagnosed me with uveitis every time. Eyes are nothing to mess with. It seems that now that my crohns is hopefully not flaring as bad, my eyes are doing better.
Feel better soon :)

I haven't had uveitis in a year and was feeling lucky. Then I read somewhere that my diabetes medicine "inhibits the process" of getting it. Go figure! I'm really happy though because when I had it the pain was pretty terrible and I'm glad I've not had another reoccurrence.

steroids can cause glaucoma
if you notice problems with peripheral vision get yourself to an ophthalmologist asap
( one teensy weensy tinsy plus side of glaucoma is that they eye drops make your lashes longer and darker, its the same thing thats in latisse)

Eye inflammation can be an extra-intestinal manisfestation of Crohn's. I've had episcleritis before. They were red and painful. Restasis didn't touch it. Steroids did.

My son developed iritus and arthritis while on immuran. Since stopping immuran, he's never had a recurrence.

I have blepharitis...inflammation of the eyelids, which causes them to be red and itchy and actually can cause them to thicken, so they look swollen. I also have dry eye, so use artificial tears daily and ointment at night as needed, and these help keep it under control, but it can be uncomfortable and annoying.i have had this for as long as I have had crohns. I remember walking into my grandsons eye doctors office for his appt. for his eye exam, and his eye dr. Looked at me and asd asked me why my eyes were so red! I said I don't know...you tell me, and that is how I found I had it.
