Remicade is responsible for a little over $7
billion dollars in annual revenue each and every year to Johnson and Johnson. They project this going up to $9 billion very soon, though they were ordered to split future revenues with Merck (another drug company or division).
That's B for BILLION again. Crazy. Sometimes you read 1.5Billion and such, but that is actually only 'quarterly revenue': so every three months.
Now add in Humria and the others and you have a market for around ~$14-$20 Billion dollars a year in annual revenue roughly for biologics.
There is zero interest from any of these companies in seeing a 'cure' come through or the disease itself to be understood. Not to be a conspiracy theory type, but it's true. They are not interested in any way.
Sucks @ss
Actually what's worse is the drug itself has a relatively poor long term success rate. Something like remission in 30% after 2 years at absolute best performance averaged I believe is the figure.
That all being said, there are some non-funded and private funded researchers that are working diligently to understand the disease better and hopefully provide some new treatment options. So that is something we have to look forward to, though it may take some time.
Oh, and as much as I hate to write it - I, and many others are probably very thankful for the darn drugs... or the option to try them as at least it is something. Some people do have success and find a bit of relief on them. Some lucky one's even find longer term success. I like to trash them from time to time, but that's not really fair perhaps.
