DVTs and pulmonary embolism

Hi I'm from the IBD forum and just wanted to know if any suffer from either of these. Just found out we're in a high risk for both

ypercoagulable state can occur in IBD, with an estimated occurrence in as many as one third of patients with IBD; however, this condition may go unrecognized until a thrombotic event occurs. The incidence of thrombotic complications may be as high as 39%; however, massive hemorrhage occurs in less than 1% of patients. Strokes, deep venous thromboses, pulmonary embolism, and arterial thromboses are not uncommon. Additionally, portal or hepatic vein thrombosis, retinal venous thrombosis, gonadal vein thrombosis, and mesenteric venous thrombosis have been reported.[9]

The hypercoagulable state correlates with the activity of the disease.[10] Its cause is unclear but may be related to increased levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor, factors V and VIII, and fibrinogen or to decreased levels of factor V Leiden, antithrombin III, and proteins C and S. The common laboratory tests include prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and thrombin time, and treatment generally consists of anticoagulant therapy.

Yeah, I have this. My platelets rise whenever I'm flaring. The technical name for elevated platelets is thrombocytosis and leads to an increased risk of blood clots. I've never had a DVT, but I did used to have painful calves sometimes, particularly when walking. My legs would just feel rather weird in general, like they were tingling internally or something.

My platelets are high again, although my legs are largely okay. They get a bit 'restless', that's about it.

My understanding is that the risks apply equally to UC and Crohns patients I.e all IBD sufferers.

As I mentioned on UC thread with this question - INR test is done for clotting time (results are in seconds, percentage and give you an INR value). Anyone with a general concern should seek the test. Anyone who thinks they have a clot (DVT or PE) should have a D Dimer test as starters in A&E (ER).

For info ... Signs I had where:
DVT - dull ache (no big deal) and limb slightly larger ... Only noticed when admiring new shoes and first time thought how bizarre. DVT recurred same place, same leg, same symptons. Leg now perm slightly larger due to DVT damage.

PE - out of breadth. Both times I wrote off initially as anaemia (low 7s!). Plus when taking a deep breadth, slight pain in centre of breast bone and felt something catch my breadth. Very distinctive. With hindsight ... Differnece between anaemia and PE shortness of breadth was the severity. Far more severe shortness with PE ... Struggle to have a shower without being completely out of breadth.

Watch out for it folks! Always check it out. PEs are killers.

I think Petah means IBS, not IBD, even though they are two completely different things.
