Concerned about Liver Function Test

Greetings. I have been on 6mp and Remicade for several years, and that combo seems to be keeping my symptoms in check. I just learned that my most recent Liver Function Test was "slightly abnormal" and that my doc wants me to be tested in one month. He said that this type of test result does occasionally happen and can be transitory. Of course, my mind is running 1000MPH . . . liver cancer, hepatitis, liver failure, etc. I wish I had more info to share, but this is all I have. I was just wondering if anyone here has had "abnormal" LFT results while taking 6MP and what the possible causes are.

I'm on imuran which turns into 6mp in the body. I have taken 6mp in the past. An abnormal liver function test can be from the 6mp, but it doesn't mean that you have to stop taking it. 6mp can cause liver toxicity, BUT.... There is a medicine called Allopurinol that for some unknown reason has a chemical effect when taken with 6mp that causes it to divert the part of the drug that effects the liver and keeps it from going toxic. This happened to me when I started taking Imuran last year and when my first LFT came back slightly elevated, my GI put me on 100mg of allopurinol a day and my subsequent tests have all come back normal.

So, don't panic. It sounds like the 6mp is the culprit, but it's fixable and you can keep taking it and get into therapeutic range to out your crohns into remission. Hope that helps!
