anal abscess/fistula -please help if you can!

Hello!
I have had a horseshoe fistula, with two openings on the left side, for past year. The right side has a short tract (which based on an mri 7 weeks ago, was becoming shorter).

However, in past week it was causing pain on right side. There was very little drainage on left.

In my appt I learned there is a small abscess on the right side. My dr gave me a script for antibiotics yesterday evening. I need to let her know in the morning if I would like to have a seton put in shakehead

The area right side feels hard. Doesn't it usually need to come to a "head" before draining?

It started draining as more liquidy than usual from the left side yesterday evening, after doing sitz baths and gently pressing on the outside.

Any suggestions on how I can get it to soften up so more will drain from left side?

I am guessing it formed as the tracts on the left seemed to be healing around the seton.

Hi EarthShine, I realize this is a late reply...

I have a horseshoe fistula that turned into a massive pelvic abscess (since it didn't break the skin). It was a huge ordeal. I got two setons placed and really, they aren't as horrible as you'd think. Plus, they aren't necessarily permanent. I would take a seton over an infection any day.

This helps and actually is timely as I still need to make a decision though very soon

Was there signs that there was internally an abscess?

I have been in less pain and think there is less swelling sine two days ago. However I feel a larger area which is stiff inside than it was 3 weeks ago when I was not in pain

Not sure if this is due to infection or scar tissue or is something else

Can an antibiotic work to get rid of it if there is infection inside?

Do you know why yours did not break the skin? What were signs there was a problem?

I have not had fever or chills, but am generally tired

Hi Earthshine! Not sure if this reply will help you or not. I had a proctocolectomy with end ileo in 2010. However, my surgeon left the anus. In 2014, my disease reappeared inside the anus...btw...I suffered with ulcerative proctitis for twelve years, 1998 thru 2010. I believe, and my current colorectal surgeon (mine retired in 2013) also believes I have a recto-vaginal fistula, but they have been unsuccessful in finding it. I sincerely think it is under that rectal cuff. My symptoms were discomfort inside the anus, but I have a whitish discharge coming out my vagina! I have been to the gyn numerous times, they also can find nothing. A few months ago, the discomfort turned into downright pain, which radiated up into my back, into my hips and around to the pelvic area. My doctor placed me on a 2 week course of Cipro. ALL symptoms have disappeared! In my opinion, I think I had an abscess in there somewhere, causing that pain and the discharge, the Cipro was able to alleviate it.

I am so glad you found relief! I hope this issue will go away! Thank you for sharing. With my issue I took pain medicine the first day and a few sitz baths during which much drained out. I was no longer in pain by Friday. They called with preliminary culture results and prescribed Cipro / flagyl instead. I have continued with them but am not sure how to guage if they are helping. Taking it a day at a time. Am hopeful this will take care of it for me.
Did you have an mri?

Yes, an MRI AND CT scan of the stomach and pelvic area, but they weren't performed until after my two week stint of Cipro was completed. All tests were negative. I did have an unusually high white count in my urine specimen though. Doctor has yet to phone me with results, but I also had them sent to my home and saw them for myself. I suppose he was satisfied there was no need for concern after taking the antibiotic...oh..and I also took a probiotic (Culturelle) along with it.

Glad Culturelle is helpful for you. I tried it recently and ended up switching to renew life extra care 50 billion which has been helpful
