Couldn't make it to the toilet and had my first accident

Over the last 9 years, whenever I needed to have a bm, I just managed to reach the bathroom on time. This time I couldn't. I needed to have a bm, then had gases and ,alas there was an accident. Since last week, I have been suffering from watery d. Saw my GI who put me on rifaximin and a probiotic for bacterial overgrowth but it seems that they haven't started working yet. I've even taken a capsule of Imodium but that was ineffective. I don't know what has happened since my diagnosis has been confirmed in the beginning of the year by the development of a fistula. Then things pursued. Rectal inflammation has become severer than before and I can say it's resistant to remicade. Now, I lost control over the bms. Having suspicions of Crohn's is totally different from having a confirmed diagnosis.

Just hoping you get a treatment plan that will get things under control. I'm sure you just need to find the right thing to add along with Remicade, that will work.

As far as not making it to the bathroom. This has happened to many with Crohn's at times for sure. I don't have Crohn's and it's happened to me twice. You're not alone.

Minnie...I had my first accident in a long time recently. Empathy from here.

Perhaps it is time to step up to the next option if remicade is not working....although my research lately is saying they are finding the new stuff to not be as effective as remicade in the long haul.

hugs from me too.....My accidents have been while sleeping and not making it in time from the bed, and i had one while at work and then had to drive home....at least i found a blanket in the car too sit on....anyway, yes it does happen and it has happened to many of us

Dear all, thank you very much. I know a lot of us, Crohnies, suffer from accidents every now and then. Before it happened several times that I couldn't retain pentasa enema and it would come out. But this time it was different. Not managing to get to the bathroom was really shocking for me though I'm trying to accept the idea that my disease doesn't spare the rectum; hence, I might one day have to remove the rectum. However, I'm trying not to think of this at the moment and pray that remicade might kick in by the 5th dose.

Aw Minnie, hugs from me. Unfortunately I deal with this more than I care to admit. It started prior to my failed flap surgery last year but has become worse since then. I don't know what to say other than be prepared with clean clothes and wipes. And know you aren't alone with this horribly embarrassing "gift" from CD.

I'm so sorry. I was really hoping the Remicade would work for you. I would never question your doctor's instructions or anything, but I thought I'd mention that probiotics actually give me diarrhea, and I think someone else here has had the same problem. I only mention it in case your diarrhea has seemed to be worse since you started taking it. I have to eat small amounts of yogurt instead - too much of that will get me too.

Probably most of us have had this happen at one time or another. I think we all have our first accidents (that others knew about) burned forever into our memories. Mine was when I was 12 and at a sleepover where there was no hiding it. My last was in a store a few years ago, and thankfully my husband was the only one who knew. He casually walked behind me as we walked out the door to the car, then rushed straight home.

Since that last accident, I started keeping a packed bag that I put in my car with a change of clothes, wipes, toilet tissue, and one of those disposable bed protectors (like a flat diaper) to protect my car seat. I also keep spare undies, wipes, and tissue in my purse.

Just know you're not alone.

I feel for you. I suffered with ulcerative proctitis for twelve years before having a subtotal colectomy with end ileostomy in 2010. Accidents? Things got so bad that I had port a pots stationed throughout my house and even in our van. The meds I tried...6MP (seven years and nada), Remicade (failed after my third infusion) and Humira (no change in condition after three months). I became prednisone dependent and it was killing me...literally KILLING me. Crohn's and Colitis are the pits.

I'm getting to the point where I believe Remicade is failing me now. I got maybe a year out of it, maybe not. Because a lot of that time was spent weaning off steriods. I don't think anything actually works for me anymore. I've tried most of the big name biologics (Humira, Cimzia, Remicade), can't take Imuran or 6mp, and Methotrexate isn't working anymore either.

I don't know. I guess there is a few more biologics out there that I haven't tried, but after failing all of these, I don't have much hope. Remicade was my big gun, and it sure didn't last long. I've been on Entocort for a while and that isn't doing much. Prednisone helps me feel better, but just really masks everything, and we know we can't stay on that crap anyway. I'm at the point of accidents too again now, so it's just awful.

Dear all, thank you so much. Your words were really reassuring. I've added Imodium to rifaximin and lacteol forte (lactobacillus) and so far things have been under control. However, that mixture of meds in addition to my normal stomach and colon meds are really irritating my stomach esp. the gastritis. My GI wanted to see me again next week to make sure that this new issue is at bay but I'm too busy and will see him the week after. Hopefully, he stops these new meds to give my stomach rest.
