First Hospital Stay

Spent 4 days in the hospital and know no more then when I went in. Went in with battling 104.9 fever for 3 days, couldnt do it myself, so I went to the hospital. Was told its Crohn's related. *** thats all i was told. Went through a sh!t load of tests and no answers. Been on around the clock Cipro and Flag, which I think got rid of the fever. Has anyone ever experienced the same? I also missed my Cimzia shots and left them in the car for 5 hours now I cant use them. It was hot as hell out the day I left them so my I called Cimzia to see if they could replace them for me @ no cost. Crossing my fingers otherwise this is really going to suck for me, It was my 2nd maintenance dose. Has that also happened to anyone too?

I had a fairly similar experience a few years ago. I'd recently started Remicade; after about a month on it I began getting increasingly higher fevers at night. The highest one reached 40.5C. I was so ill, all I could do was just get in the bath and lie there, unable to even get up to go to the toilet - I just went in the bath.

I was used to fevers as part of my Crohn's, but something about these felt different and I was scared. Went to A&E the next day. (My dad predicted nastily that they would just send me home with paracetamol; the man who has wasted more doctors' time than almost anyone else I know told me I would be wasting their time - yes, I still remember this 5 years on ¬_¬.) I wasn't sent home with paracetamol, but admitted.

Stayed there for 5 days. In retrospect I think they fumbled the ball fairly badly during that stay. First I was put on IV steroids, then taken off them the next day and switched to antiobiotics (metronidazole, which is generic Flagyl). Secondly, nobody did an abdominal x-ray. I had a lung x-ray though, like w.t.f? Had no cough or any other sign of a chest infection. And thirdly, they let me go even though I suspect I was relapsing on the day of discharge. To be fair, I was dying to get out though, so persuaded myself I was just having a bad reaction to the dire hospital pizza.

So, basically nothing of any worth was found out and I was back again, a few days later, this time with excruciating abdominal pain. The metronizadole had done nothing beyond giving me evil-smelling green stools and making me feel sick after I took it. This time around they managed to do most of the right things: put me on IV steroids and keep me on them; do an abdominal x-ray and CT scan (think I may have had another lung x-ray too, but not sure). The IV steroids kicked in and kept me from the surgery I would have definitely had otherwise. Not that anybody told me this at the time - I wasn't told anything. I only found out the results of the tests after I left hospital; the abdominal x-ray showed signs of toxic megacolon and the CT scan showed a stricture in the terminal ileum.

Also found out from my GI that he and the surgeon had argued over surgery. The surgeon - who went on to do both my surgeries - wanted to do surgery (naturally). But my GI wanted to give more time for the Remicade to work. It never did, and you can see my eventual fate in my sig.

High fevers in Crohn's are usually indicative of an infection, abscess or intestinal perforation. If you have Crohn's colitis, it may be a symptom of toxic megacolon as well, which is what I had.

PS: That was my first hospital stay as well. Have had a few more since then.

Sorry about that... It does sound absolutely horrible, what you are going through right now.

I'm guessing Entyvio failed and Cimzia was the next biologic after that :/

I'm afraid I'm about as much as in the dark as you are and don't know what to suggest. I certainly would resist exploratory surgery unless it was a medical emergency though - not saying that's good advice necessarily, but the fewer times I'm cut open, the better.

In the meantime, I hope your next Cimzia shot goes okay.

One of the better ER's is where I went. Blood in stool has been better, which I think I can contribute to Flag/Cipro. Saw Urologist for blood in Urine today and like the ER Dr. said I have to get scoped. What a waste of 2 hrs of my life to hear the same thing that an Hospital Urologist said. I lost those 2 hours, which I was so annoyed waiting for 2 hours to see a Dr. only to hear the same thing which I tried to schedule first, but I needed to see him first "SCAM" so now I'm scheduled for the 20th for a scope of my man hood "Ouch" He did say which I thought was odd that there was inflammation in the large intestine which could cause blood in my urinary tract path. Has anyone ever experienced something similar.

I have not had any lupus reaction to the TNF meds but have a seen a post or two before of people who had.

As to your bladder question, yes severe inflammation in your colon can affect your bladder and urinary tract. Right before my final surgery my bladder and vagina were a mess all because the inflammation in my rectum and colon got so bad. Even just a couple days after surgery with my colon out my bladder felt better. My bladder was scoped by a urologist while I was under for surgery. My surgeon said the inflammation was so severe they were worried I might have permanent bladder damage. They left my catheter in for several days after surgery and luckily the inflammation resolved and so far all is back to normal with my bladder.
