After my first colonoscopy 2 months ago, my doctor didnt give me a solid diagnosis. She said that I have what looks like Ulcerative Colitis, but that it could very well be Crohn's. Although for the past three months I have had chronic throat pain and am starting to wonder whether or not it is CD? I recently found a large sore that I could see at the back of my mouth that lasted for a few days. Even though the sore has gone away, my sore throat persists.
I am wondering if anyone else has found CD in their throat? or mouth? I went to the doctor today, saw a nurse practitioner, and she laughed when I told her that I was wondering if my throat pain was Crohn's. She said that you cannot get it in your throat. Whatever it is, it hurts like heck. She prescribed me Prilosec and told me to go to a ear/nose/throat specialist.
Has anyone else had these troubles?
Thanks.

That NP doesn't know what she is talking about
(JMHO). You can have Crohns from mouth to anus, so yes it is possible to have it in your throat. I would recommend you contacting your GI to discuss this further. Hugs!

Yes, that NP is wrong! I have been diagnosed with Crohn's from mouth to anus and my when I am flaring in my mouth, I get them on the back of my throat, too. (My most recent endoscopy showed Crohn's on my throat.) They do take a few days to resolve themselves, but it seems they just pop up elsewhere in the oral cavity. I have found the thing that gives me relief is a medicine called Kanka. It comes with a brush on the end and you just crank it until the medicine comes onto the brush. It will numb your whole mouth and throat, but does provide relief. If it's a typical canker sore, it will heal faster with this. Unfortunately, as we all know...Crohn's is not a typical canker sore! Talk to your GI about
it - mine said if it was bad enough he could prescribe something (or my dentist could).

Wow, NP's are supposed to know their stuff. During my first flare I got a huge ulcer inside my cheek in my mouth. It gradually grew and grew over a few weeks, but quickly went away after starting pred.

During my first flare I was diagnosed with the flu, which the dr said explained my sore throat - by the time I dragged myself into the G.I.'s office, he took one look at me and said he was doing an immediate colonoscopy in a few hours (since I hadn't eaten in several days but was still using the bathroom 30 times a day I didn't need to do a prep) - he took a look at all the ulcers in the back of my throat and on my uvula and had me go next door to a specialty pharmacy where they make the medicine there - my throat hurt so badly I couldn't even speak at that point and had to write down on a piece of paper what I needed. It was terrible. They slowly started to heal when I was admitted to the hospital for a few weeks and was on IV steroids and a morphine drip and about
10 other medications. Always ask questions and if you don't get a good answer, ask them here or go get a second opinion.
I can't believe there are so many medical professionals who are so ignorant and lacking in knowledge about
symptoms or signs of Crohn's and UC. Frustrating!!
(also, speaking of the throat, I was on so much prednisone that I developed thrush in my mouth. The nurses told me to "try and forget about
it". Finally a young resident who had to make the rounds looked at me and told me I could take Nystatin, which finally helped.)

Absolutely you can have crohns in you throat. It is a small percentage of patients that get extraintestinal manifestations but it can and does happen. When CD was diagnosed in my esophagus my GI immediately put me on prednisone and I started Remicade not long after for overall symptoms. I get sores in the back of my mouth/top of my throat several times a year. Watch the sugary and or fatty snacks that seems to be my big trigger.

Thank you so much for the responses and suggestions. I truly appreciate your help! I will probably contact my GI and let her know... even though I guess i will be seeing an ear/nose/throat specialist as it is.
Thanks so much! It is disappointing/concerning that internet communication provides me with more health information than my own health care provider!!

Hello, I am a newbe here... My daughter has been diagnosed with CD and I have had a sore throat as long as I can remember...I am 51 now. So i got the idea to look it up online and see if it could be from CD. It seems like it would be unusual to have a sore throat for so long continuously and not to have an ebb and flow of flares and other symptoms though? My throat usually hurts when I swallow...I mean just sitting here...I haven't really noticed different foods affecting it. I did go to an ear nose and throat specialist in the 80s or early 90s and he gave me something for sinus drainage and wanted to fix a deviated septum...other regular drs have also tried nasal meds but they didn't help a bit so I gave up.
Anyone have thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave! It's really hard to say for sure, especially if you aren't having any lower GI symptoms of CD. A chronic sore throat can be caused by a few things. Including chronic post nasal drip, and even GERD. So that's a few things that need to be considered. An endoscopy might be a good idea so they can get a look and see if you have any ulceration, any signs of damage from GERD in there.
I have had Crohn's in my throat, which was very similar to having a bad sore throat all the time. It went hand in hand with the rest of my Crohn's symptoms though, so I knew I was flaring. Good luck, and I hope you get some answers!

Thanks for that Jen, If I do have CD, it would be very mild but I do have some symptoms...stomach hurts a lot especially when stressed, weak fingernails, and what really got me thinking about
it is that I think I have a fistula...also chronic fatigue.
