My 5 pound chihuahua has severe Crohn's disease. Need to find a diet for her!!

Hi guys and girls!! My poor little dog (Ella) just got diagnosed with severe Crohn's and is now on an I.V. Until she can come home tomorrow. Would love for some people to post some helpful tips about any diet she could go on right away. Would really like to hit the ground running and start this immediately to nurse her back to as normal a life as she can have. She is a little under 5 pounds and is a teacup chihuahua.

I'm sorry too. Worth a shot! Just trying to get as much help as possible and feedback as quickly as I can for this. Google only sends me to 2/3 places with any information on this. Really disheartening.

Our beagle had bouts of colitis over the years. They would give her steroids, antibiotics and a prescription can food that really helped for sensitive tummies. Thankfully she would only need a few weeks treatment at a time, unlike me!

Like in people diet probably won't control it alone, BUT in general you want to stay away from the grocery store brands and get a high quality food for her. Stay away from things that have corn and grains as a first ingredient. Grain free might be best over all. Stick with foods that are limited in ingredients, so it will be easier to digest. Some really good brands are Fromm, Canidae, Zignature. See if you have a specialty dog food store in your area and go in and talk to them. A lot of the times they can also point you in a good direction. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your consern. She had just been laying around and not her normal self at all for about 2 weeks and we noticed her stomach was very bloated (almost twice her normal size like a baseball) 2 days ago after she had a massive amount of diarea. She had X-rays and an ultrasound done and the vet said it was Crohn's disease and a severe case at that. I was not aware that dogs could get this and also thought that this was only a human disease. She will be 8 this march so she isn't very old which is disheartening. Thank you all for the input and tips.
