My husband has been on Imodium and Lomotil every single day for YEARS. Recently, his GI doc recommended stopping these.

Anyone else have a similar story on how it went when stopping these medications? Did you do it "cold turkey?" How did it all go?

Gi doc at mayo suspects paradoxical constipation because all procedures and tests showed no active Crohns

It's good that he doesn't have crohns. Phew. I'm curious as to how much he was taking? I've always wondered if it was ok to take Imodium regularly. My Bms are normal, just frequently & urgently. Did the doc at Mayo give an suggestions as to how to taper?

I would be interested in what you found out about tapering off immodium. My boyfriend has been on immodium for many many years, too. He takes about 9-12 of them per day!!! He was diagnosed with Crohn's in the 80s but now they say it seem more like ulcerative colitis. either way, food goes right through him when he eats, unless he takes it. Poor guy. I'm looking for any help and suggestions I can get for him. Thank you! Laura

Well, he still has Crohn's, it just isn't "active" right now. Doesn't explain his abdominal pain after eating though.

LKH, I will let you know how it goes being off of these for awhile!

So what was he advise as far as tapper?

I'm pretty confused. Is toxic mega colon not a threat in CD? I've recently downgraded to CD but when I had UC I was warned about imodium and mega colon. I would take it maybe twice a week when I had a social event so I could eat or hike etc. Since most of the time my stools have been normal--just frequency/urgency maybe I would have been more successful in every aspect of my life if I could take imodium regularly. I've never heard of anyone taking 9 pills a day for years.
