How long does your chest cold last while on Remicade

Hey Guys,

Over a week ago I developed cold symptoms. Within 2 days I was coughing and could not stop. (And I sounded like a seal)

The internalist called in an antibiotic, cough medicine with codeine, and musinex d. Have taken for last 7 days. No longer sound like a seal but still coughing and feel like I am sick. (Like I am in a tunnel and everything is far away, echoes and is fuzzy) Now I have diarrhea from the antibiotic (Dr. Refused to change and I must finish because of my allergies to other antibiotics) and a tingly itchy tongue.(but its not white) AND to top everything off I just figured out that one plop that I have been hearing when I empty my colostomy bag has been my half digested antibiotic pill!!!

I have a doctors appointment in the am tomorrow and will probably be given another script for the same antibiotic.(per his nurse who I spoke to today)

I was not able to take my methotrexate Friday because I was sick. Will ask about that in am. My heart rate was at 136 BM for almost 8 hours....but when my temp dropped to below 100 it went down to 100 and now its at 70. My blood pressure has been spot on.

Anyone else have anything similar happen? How long did it last? Did the doctor put you in the hospital? Any advice?

Hey Clo! I'm so sorry you caught a nasty bug too! Mine is finally gone. it lasted a little over two weeks. I didn't have a fever though I often felt like i did. I did have issues with my ears that made everything feel off. I'd definitely mention that the pill didn't digest. maybe you need a liquid or IV version? Watch out for that Heart rate! Id say just stay quiet, keep drinking a lot and see what the doctor says tomorrow. Are you still getting fevers? Hang in there! Good luck tomorrow!

I am a bit concerned your doctor put you on an antibiotic when you have a cold, since that's viral and not bacterial. Having a heart rate at 136 for 8 hours isn't too huge, especially if you're dehydrated from the diarrhea.

Chest colds can be bacterial to be fair. But I would hope that a culture was taken first to determine whether it was bacterial or viral.

@Clo - I've had colds which have gone on for what felt like forever. (It's not the meds either, as I've had similar long-lasting colds when I've been off all meds.) But nothing which has gone to the chest and required antibiotics for. Hope you feel better soon.

True, some can be bacterial. It just surprised me.

If it goes to the chest, it's more likely to be a secondary bacterial infection. I dunno, I had it happen to me once, but that was many years ago, before I got Crohn's even. Was living in Hull at the time, a dreary, dank, damp city even by England's dreary, dank, damp standards. I got a cold which turned into a hacking, chesty cough. After a week it hadn't got any better, so I saw a GP who prescribed me antibiotics and that cleared it up overnight.

Well went to doctors today...all day.

GI and Colorectal want me to get stable. They hope the Remicade will start kicking in by May.(we are supposed to do a colonscopy after Mays bloodwork.)

My rectovagina fistula has gotten HUGE...but now appears to be holding steady. It is very low. They do not know if it can be fixed but they are going to have to try at some point cause its huge. And the chances are greater that the stomach is permanent because I still have so much going on...

So then had to go to pcp who is also an internalist. She didn't answer her phone Friday or Monday. Today my GI called her on his cell phone to tell her to get lung x-rays...bloodwork...figure out what's going on. She toldhim to sendme over...so we walked over there and she had left!!! Airhead!!!

So GI did order for x-ray. Will get results tomorrow.
Will post more when I know more.

If I weren't so sick I would be fighting mad. I tried to call my PCP all day today to ask about the x-ray results. She dodged me all day...then her nurse called after 5:00 pm to tell me they don't have results back yet and they called in a liquid antibiotic for me to continue.

My GI called to check on me and when I told him no results yet he said that was very strange as the hospital 99.9 of the time has them to the doctor the same day.... So he will research first thing tomorrow...and he said we gotta find a new pcp....one closer to you that will work with and yet follow directives from me too....

Now I am just hoping the x-ray results are just laying on her desk and nothing is seriously wrong..... Aaaggh!!!! I dislike waiting for results.....and

Right now....I just want to stop coughing. Even my stoma is sore from all the coughing. And my stupid smart phone keeps changing my words.....

I had a chest cold back in October. I was pretty sick for almost 2 weeks, and then the darn cough seemed to drag on a good 6 weeks (eventually was just a dry hacking cough). Always a good idea to get it checked out though in case it's a secondary bacterial infection.

My PCP dodged me all day today. I got so frustrated I called the hospital x-ray department....who told me they faxed her the report/results on the 14th....the same day I had the x-ray. They stated they couldn't tell me the results but would mail a copy to me. I finally just left the pcp a message telling her she should have received the results and to call me.

My GI called the x-ray department and they told him I hadn't signed a release for the report to be sent to him. That was at 4....and he said he was walking over there to straighten them out..... Oh to be a fly on the wall.....Lol He said he called her to get the antibiotic refilled because when he tapped on my left sinus I about puked and the whole room spun....which usually means inflammation and infection.

Still sick but feel better since I started the liquid antibiotic AND its yummy cherry flavored...mm mm good.

Cross your fingers that this passes quickly. I am so wimpy..

That just sounds so miserable. But on a positive note, your GI sounds AMAZING!!!
