How can I rest my bowel? Diet suggestions?

Pain hits 1 1/2 hour after I eat. The day I saw my GI , had only soup then and when I told him pain is less w/o food, he said bowel rest is a good idea. However, when I asked him about suggestions, his reply was the same restricted diet I normally eat: plain rice, banana,bread, lean meat/chicken, no fibers, bland food w/o any spices or marination. These types of food aggravate my symptoms. Any suggestions of a gentler diet?

Have you ever tried Ensure plus, or Fortisip? They have various flavours so you can find one that suits. Then there is jelly, lemonade....

Studies show that the BRAT diet is outdated and not really used anymore . I usually make a very simple soup of chicken thighs ( no skin ) water , salt and 1 table spoon of olive or coconut oil .Boil that for 45 min then add pealed potato cubed small contine to boil till potato is soft . Remove thighs let cool enough to touch and remove meat from bone . Return meat to pot . I then use a submerged blender stick and blend smooth . This gives me a balance of Protein , carbs , salt and fat .i have a 8oz cup every 2-3 hours . Also to stay hydrated usually water and apple juice ( for my sugar intake) Feel better soon .

Ive been having a lot of pain whenever i eat. Turns out i have SIBO. Have you been checked for it? Hope you can find some relief soon.

Bucko, I've had SIBO a lot before and these are not the symptoms I'm used to. I have constipation and can hardly pass any gases out and if I do, my TI hurts.

When I had my partial obstruction I went on an all liquid diet, and primarily had pureed soups, and cream of wheat and jello. It was miserable! I have never done well with Ensure....the sweetness or sugar in it just makes me feel worse. It's amazing how little food can keep you alive, at least temporarily. When I have gotten really sick like that, I don't worry about nutrition as much as just getting something that won't hurt down. Obviously it is not a good long term plan, but hopefully things will ease up soon.
I'm really thinking your doc should be doing an MRI or CT scan to make sure you don't have a partial obstruction.

I would try to avoid bread and rice. Avoid gluten food as this makes you more bloated. Try chicken soup homemade for a couple of days adding Carrot's. Boiled eggs are good too. Try and stick to foods which can be easily digested. I'm on a very restricted diet and don't eat any starchy food or sugar. I used to have severe bloating but since I've cut out gluten its not so bad.

@Gumby. I agree w you. I'll wait until a week has passed since I have seen my GI tjen I'll ask him to let me have either a CT or an MRI since pain does not change.
@Hedgehogs6. Both bread and rice have always relieved my symptoms and I had no problems w them. I'll give it a try.

how long does a single juice fast last to have any meaningful healing of small bowel at all?like 1 day/2 day/3 day/1 week/2 week minimum, any idea?

I've been doing about 3 juice fasts per year (averaging 17 days length for each one) since 2005 and haven't had colitis since 2011 so I'm sure it played a role in my body healing itself. When you give the body time to rejuvenate or regenerate and don't digest food (which uses 70% of the energy) and still get super nutrients absorbed with organic fruit and vegetable juice then the reversal of disease can initiate but it takes time

You mite want to read breaking the vicious cycle. Its a scd diet.

back in 2005 when I was undiagnosed, I had diarrhea EVERY DAY. I tried the BRAT diet not knowing I had a serious stomach problem. A few months later, I was diagnosed with UC, 6 years after that I was re-diagnosed w/ Crohns.

So, can you tolerate high fibers? You mentioned you strain them. Doesn't fiber aggravate symptoms? Which veggies do you juice?

Thank you, healseeker. Well, it's interesting that you can tolerate high fibers and do benefit from the juices. I can't. High fibers would throw me into flare ups as I have ileocolitis. My GI warned me against juicing either fruits or veggies and the only thing he allowed me is to boil them and drink the water but no fibers whatsoever.

Don't know how my stomach would react to apple vinegar. When I'm in a better state other than the flare up I have been suffering from for almost a month now I might give it a try.
