Calprotectin levels

Hi all, in December I had a stool sample which said my calprotectin levels were greater than 6000. not many people seem to know much about the calprotectin levels including my gp. The ibd consultant said he wants to see me as soon as possible as its very high. The nurse said she hasn't seen levels so high before which isn't comforting. I was also told I mite need another colonoscopy. The first colonoscopy I had was about 4 weeks ago and they couldn't visualise the iiluem. Instead of an MRI their thinking of that even though they can't visualise certain areas. I've not heard of a calprotectin being so high. Should I be worried? I've been waiting 4 weeks for results and now its a sudden urgency to get me seen. You would of thought I should be in hospital the way the nurse was talking. She said she wants to ensure nothing has been missed and to see if the inflammation has improved and that another colonoscopy is normal. I don't have any symptoms just sometimes a mild stomach ache which on a scale from 1-10 I would say is a 2 and I only go to the toilet once a day. I'm meant to be going out tomorrow for a few drinks and since hearing from the Dr I'm scared. Is it OK to drink? I had a few drinks only 2 weeks ago. Actually I had more than a few lol. I don't feel sick at all but feel something could be wrong due to this stool test. I did have bloody diarrhea at the time but it was clearing up but it must of been greater than this wen I first had symptoms.

Yes. You should go out & enjoy yourself!! Just be sensible.

Why were you tested in the first place?
Mine is 1066 with symptoms. Couldn't imagine it being as high as 6000. Suggest getting re-tested.

Why didn't you collect from a plastic container? If I'm understanding correctly collecting it from the actual toilet means you've contaminated the test. I'm no expert but I'd assume that would have an impact. You should speak to your GI and get re-tested, this time doing it properly. If you were going 20 times a day your test results would be high, no matter how you feel.

UB is right on the contamination from the toilet bowl. I would request a re-test. What I do is ask somebody at the hospital for a paper bowl (the ones used on the wards for patients to throw up in or wee in). The larger ones will fit over the toilet seat and you can just go in that and collect your stool sample from that.

As for the result, I understand your worry but I suspect it isn't terribly relevant. When I was at my worst with the Crohn's about 5 years ago I had a FC result of 550-ish. Since my last surgery I've been having results of around 1800-1900. I think - but don't know for sure - that after a certain point (say 500 odd?) calprotectin numbers stop having much meaning.
