Antibiotic and Steroid cocktail???

Ok question for all of you. My dr just gave me Ciprofloaxin, metroNIDAZOLE and Prednisone as some sort of scary cocktail. After speaking to the pharmacist and reading all the wonderful side effects I am actually quite intimidated and worried about taking these. First couple rounds has me taking alot of pills then tapering down over the next 10 days. Has anyone else here done this and are the side effects as scary as they sound? I think I know what she is going for on this but at the same time I am kinda leary about it. I am already taking the prednisone since I have taken that one in the past but the antibiotics are my real question and hesitation. If anyone could shed some light on this that would be great. Thanks

Why are you taking these? Do you have c diff? Some people find good success to help Crohn's get in remission with short bursts of antibiotics.

I have not been formally diagnosed with C Diff. I had been having an extended flare up and she mentioned wanting to make sure I didnt have anything else going on in there since I do have diverticulitis as well. I have heard other have had some luck with the antibiotics but I been sick for so long that anything that potentially will make it worse or make me even sicker just is not appealing to me lately.

So why don't you have a stool sample done? I wouldn't risk heavy-duty antibiotics unless I had a positive diagnosis of something. Those meds can CAUSE c. diff. if you don't already have it.

Stool sample is on the list. I have the poop on a stick kit at home right now. LOL. And I guess that is part of my issue with this scifigal, I really dont want to subject my body to heavy-duty antibiotics unless it actually has to be done for a purpose. My tummy doesnt typically care for regular antibiotics as it is so I cant imagine what these could do if I dont really need them. But at the same time I am curious as to if they would help with some of the other things. A week ago I may have jumped on them because I was really feeling cruddy and in the midst of having quite a flare up but thank goodness the last few days I have actually started feeling better and dont want to mess that up.

I've been on prednisone several times and it has pros and cons. It makes you feel great almost right away. When I was on it my stomach was settled and cramps stopped almost immediately, but the side effects aren't fun. Acne is a big side effect, my face got very swollen, and I experienced nausea and mood swings. Prednisone isn't meant to be a long term medication, it's meant to stabilize you until your GI can find suitable long term treatment for you. I would ask your GI how long he intends to keep you on the prednisone, you shouldn;t be on it for more than 12 weeks. I haven't been on the other medications. Hope this helped

Thanks R.Tennyson. Only doing a short 2 week stint this time around and going to reevaluate how things are going. I have done the prednisone before and like you said it helps and first couple days are great. But I have hit the lull now and getting the ickies again. But overall I feel a little better and have most of my appetite back. Since I am usually always dealing with nausea at some level its hard to say if its a side effect or just my normal stuff. And if you ask my wife I already had mood swings and can be grumpy lol. Luckily I have not had to the acne or swelling before and so far not this go around. Right now my "morning sickness" seems to be elevated and takes a few hours to get going but thats nothing new either.

Yes antibiotic and prednisone is not usual cocktail and it can be scary.

Buuuuut, in my case, it does work really really well! I'm back from a flare with this treatment right now and I'm feeling better everyday. My stools are almost always form (thanks to the antibiotic (Vanco)), I don't think it's going to stay that way after stopping it though. The antibiotic also allowed me to gain back weight quickly because it makes my food intolerance disappear, it stopped nausea and night sweating.

I've got Vanco prescribed even if all my stool test were negative. I have an history of infections : 2 salmonella followed by two c-diff. 2 months before the last c-diff, i've got a flare that was just like c-diff, but tested negative. I was put only on prednisone only and it was terrible. It did stop the fever, but I was still losing weight, nausea, few diarrhea at night. Exactly when I stopped the pred, fever came back and c-diff hit hard this time.
That's why with this current flare, my GI didn't took chance, I had to get better (or it was surgery), so he prescribed 3 weeks Vanco, which I just finished today.

So yeah, in my particular case, Pred + Antibiotic is always doing a great job. It puts me back on my feet in a few weeks. And now, I'm so glad my doctor prescribed it even when all stool test come back negatives. (And I do suppose I have had a few false negative in the past, sometimes, only the fresh sample from colono test positive.... )

And I would strongly recommand taking S. Boulardii with the antibiotic to keep c-diff away! And other probiotics.

Raydio, if your dr thinks the diverticulitis is flaring too, this is probably why she rx'd an antibiotic, they normally do this. If you are not comfortable with this, perhaps give her call.
