Hi
I'm wondering if anyone can help me, I got diagnosed with crohns last yeah in July 2016, I had a perianal absess 3 years ago & my surgeon believes it was related to crohns. I underwent bowel surgery as soon as I found out so up to now my crohns has been fine (fingers crossed) but my absess on my bottom keeps flaring up and I can hardly sit down my surgeon suggested the next time it does flair to have another drainage but I'm terrified of the packing as it was a how lot worse than having my bowel surgery!! I'm 4 months pregnant and I don't really want to put myself under the stress of going through the packing again, has anyone else had a absess draniage and is their a different way for it to heal instead of the packing?

Please help!! It would be greatly appreciated as I have nobody else to turn to about the same situation!!

What kind of bowel surgery did you have? How did you go from abscess to surgery so quickly? Why didn't you go on a maintenance med after your surgery???
What does your perinatologist say about all this? Or your OB? Or your GI?
I don't listen to surgeons because they're way too motivated to cut, but only when it's not their *** on the line. I had some bleeding from my fistula last year and my last GI just told me to call a surgeon. I'm so glad that SOB is no longer my GI.
Your only feasible option is to go on Remicade infusions.
That's the only thing that closed my fistula for 6 months.
I've had (almost) two babies on Remicade, so don't think that it will hurt your baby.
The only thing was no live vaccines for the baby, which is fine because there's only one to protect the baby against the Rotavirus.
GIs like to time remicade infusions, so that your last one will be before 34 weeks, and then you'll get the next one after your Csection.
In your case, I'm not sure if they'll even let you because you'll need loading doses to start; all this takes time and you have 20 weeks to 34 weeks to get it all done.
If you start Remicade, which is really the best most life saving drug out there, and then stop it for longer than 8 weeks, you could get an allergic reaction to it.
I'm the last person to advise packing, since my abscess ruptured on its own and I've never had anything surgical done to my abscess/fistula.

Hey @dem1, glad you made your own thread. Lol, @gypsy, you know me so well. ;)

I definitely agree, you need to figure out meds. But most doctors really hesitate for you to start medications while pregnant. Not just because of the loading doses, but more the fear of an allergic reaction or intolerance. What medications are you on? Or have you been on any? What has your GI said about any of this?

I know the packing sucks, but it's the best way for an abscess to heal. You want the abscess to heal from the inside-out. Otherwise the abscess just heals on the outside, fills up again, bursts again, etc. Or even worse, it turns into a fistula. The one abscess I didn't have packed (my first) turned into a recto-vaginal fistula that still hasn't healed after 5 years.

But congratulations on the new baby! That's so exciting!

So the only meds I'm on at the moment is pentasa, I haven't seen my GI yet as I only started to flair over the weekend.
That's the part I'm worried about I have to mentally prepare myself for the packing as my last packing didn't go down to well, the absess has flaired right on top of my scar from my previous absess I had 3 years ago sad. So I kind of feel your pain! I'm going to speak with my GI tomorrow to see what's the next steps we can take.

Totally understand wanting it all to go smoothly. And avoid pain meds, that's always stressful with Crohn's while pregnant. But it is really exciting!

Pentasa is not great for Crohn's. Some studies have shown that it's no more effective than a placebo. If that's what your GI prescribed, I highly recommend getting a new GI. Especially if you had an abscess. Remicade is the best there is for healing those, but again, it may depend on your GI. If the new abscess is where the old one is, you could probably already have a fistula and that's what caused it in the first place.

It could be your abscess is near a nerve, which is why it was so painful before. Were your surgeries done by a regular surgeon or a colo-rectal surgeon?
