Nothing adds stress to being in the middle of a hurricane like throwing in tornadoes (who knew?) and getting stomach cramps with non-stop diarrhea. And kids who have been cooped up for two days.

It's still going on and just insane at the moment. A tornado just missed our subdivision about
30 minutes ago by less than a mile. And it's supposed to keep going like this through Monday. It's ridiculously insane.

Stay safe!
I have relatives in Houston; they have had flooding before. Sounds awful.

Thanks for checking in @lab. We're all doing great physically. It was really hairy for a couple of days, but luckily our subdivision didn't have any flooding into the homes. One night it got up to front porches but then the rain slowed enough so things could drain a bit.
Emotionally, I'm a total wreck. I had refilled all of my prescript
ions, but apparently they didn't actually put my antidepressant in the bag or something, because it wasn't there when I went to fill up my pill box. It shows "still in progress" on the Walgreens app. But it means that since Saturday I've been cold-turkey without the antidepressant, while flaring a bit (about
8 bms per day with cramping, but no blood) and lack of sleep (tornado and flood warnings every 45 minutes all night since this started, so I'm running on 3-5 hours of very interrupted sleep). But thankfully the roads are clear enough today to make it to the local grocery store, and the pharmacy there is
open for a couple of hours and they're giving me an emergency fill for a couple of days' worth until my regular pharmacy
opens back up.
Guys, I can't even begin to describe how horrific this has been. As I scroll through posts of the local facebook groups I'm in, it's just awful. People will be trapped with waters rising and posting out calls for help because they can't get out and and 911 is on hold for literally hours at a time. I just feel shell-shocked.

totally speechless Absolutely horrifying
I am so glad that you are okay.
I cannot even imagine. I lived through Sandy here and that was nothing compared to this- I don't think anything compares to this from what I'm hearing
Do you know what part of Texas Clo was from? Has me a bit freaked out that we haven't heard from her.

Thanks so much everyone. Please keep the people here in your prayers. I feel so blessed; the devastation has been beyond absolutely anything I could imagine. It's going to take months to recover for some people, and even though a lot of the rain has stopped, the flooding is going to get worse before it gets better. The reservoirs are full to capacity, so they are having to intentionally release water and flood neighborhoods, etc. or they'll burst and everything will flood.
I have to say, though, that the outpouring of help from everywhere else has been so incredibly miraculous to watch. People have flooded in from all over the country to help, bringing boats to help rescue people and animals, trucks of food and supplies, and their emotional strength. Their selflessness in dropping everything to literally come running from as far as New York makes me cry just thinking about
it.

I'm glad to hear your subdivision didn't get flooded. I live in Austin, and work for the city. We're getting ready for evacuees to be bused in to us. It's so devastating to see what's happened. And yet, so amazing how people, communities and resources are coming together to help.

Scifigal,
Hang in there. I know this is difficult to live through. Just a word of caution....please watch out for alligator's, snakes and fire ants... Like you don't have enough to watch out for.....right? But they really do go to higher ground and they seem to love the bushes and trees. Watch the weather closely and if Harvey continues to stall consider moving furniture up on blocks or upstairs. Do not allow kids to play in the run off-it is full of waste. And stock up on water And canned goods- things that don't need refrigeration. Just in case. ( but things that you will use regardless) And make sure your insurance is up to date-although no agents are probably offering flood or hurricane right now....but it is worth a try. And finally.....if they send out an alert
that they are shutting off the water.....fill your tubs and everything you have available with water. You will need it later for baths and flushing the toilet. If it has gotten to the point they are shutting it off-please don't drink it.....
I am really sorry you are going through this. It is a difficult time. Remember that you and your families safety is the priority. Stuff can be replaced. Just be safe.
I am currently in North Texas. We purchased a lot one block from the ocean in 2012 so we could retire there and walk to the beach...Lol...in . .drum roll please....yes....that's right......Port Aransas. Aaaaagggghh!!!!! Silly silly people.....don't they know how powerful the ocean and weather is ??? I guess I had a brain fart. The good news is we are safe....and have a roof over our heads.
My friend just called sobbing because she lost everything AND she forgot to pay her insurance bill....AND it is past the period of lateness that allows your insurance to cover you if they still receive a payment. Horrible...... I don't know how some people will ever recover....
Say a prayer for everyone impacted by Harvey.

Hey @clo! I was also thinking about
you this week and wondering how it was going. I am so glad that you are doing well and are safe. My heart breaks for your friend who lost so much. So many people did. This has caused flooding in areas that have never flooded before, so a lot of people are going to really struggle. Thank goodness for FEMA loans at least. We just bought this house three months ago and made sure to get flood insurance, so that was a relief.
I've seen videos of the fire ants and alligators! So awful!!! Mostly in my subdivision we had a lot of carp that came up with the water and were literally swimming in our streets! Some people actually had fish for dinner. But it's going to be nasty as the water goes down and they get caught. Bleh.
I really appreciate all of your insight and advice. I'm a couponer and a Mormon, so between the two things we have so many non-perishable food items, toiletries, etc. that we could literally live for over a year without needing to buy groceries other than the basic staples of milk, eggs, and bread. We've been able to share a lot with our neighbors who quickly ran out of diapers and other things.
I think we're mostly past it all, and we were one of the very lucky few who didn't flood in the house and never had water/power/internet shut off. It came close several times, and the tornadoes were awful, but I think I'm mostly emotionally damaged. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the local news and Facebook. I'm itching to get out and start helping rebuild, but it's still going to be days before the flood waters go down. They're supposed to actually get worse even though the rain has stopped because as we drain, the reservoirs will keep filling up and need to be released into neighborhoods. It feels like the "gift that just keeps on giving," only not really a gift.
Prayers are desperately needed, thank you. Prayers for your friend especially.

Sci-fi,
I am so glad that you have been fortunate. I didn't mean to sound bossy. I just was thinking of your kids out playing and.....I just go overboard. Sorry.....
Tornadoes scare me too!! It just seems like there are so many things to worry about
that sometimes you forget about
some of them. Tornadoes are one of them. Down here we have water spouts. They fall apart once they hit land-but out in the gulf. ..they can actually pick up boats.
My friend went by our place and it has minimal damage. Her and her husband are staying in it for now. She willgo to her place and see if she can salvage anything and then move it to our place....storing it under the deck... Her place really was destroyed while ours....the streets are dirty....there is some debris in the yard. ..but everything else looks pretty good. Don't understand how one house is spared while the other is destroyed. So very sad.....
Please stay in touch. Those flood waters are scary too!!
Praying for you and yours!

Jeez. Don't suppose this will cheer you up but I read an article recently about
the Japanese tsunami back in 2011 from the viewpoint of the survivors of a small village called Okama (think that's right, or I may be getting confused with the name of the school...). It must have been absolutely petrifying for all involved and certainly made you realise the power of the ocean.
I'm glad your home wasn't flooded, scifigal, but like you said it's not gonna be fun for the people whose homes were. Hopefully the flood waters will go down soon and you can get out there and help people. Wishing everyone involved the very best of luck in moving forwards after this - I hope homes can be quickly rebuilt or, at the very least, people quickly rehoused if nothing else.

Its going to take many years for recovery. We dealt with Sandy in 2012 which was terrible but still not as bad as this. I drove through some of the worst hit spots recently and there is still major work going on to restore many houses.

Man Scifigal & Clo I am glad you are ok! I am in Northern Louisiana (just outside Baton Rouge) and this area flooded last year--people are still living in the FEMA trailers. A lot of people didn't have flood insurance because they weren't required go carry it outside the "flood zone", so they are in debt up to their eyeballs. The anniversary of "the great flood of 2016" just passed and people are having PTSD with what's happening in Texas. We all feel for Texas and practically everyone I know is helping in some way, hauling trailers of water and neccessities, some were part of the "cajun navy" (my husband was in 2016 but I need him here right now), having fundraisers, etc. Please know that you are in our hearts and prayers! You are not alone and people are grieving for your losses and ready to help you rebuild. #Texasstrong #Louisianastrong

Thank you so much, Plucky. I'm sorry for what so many of you are going through. My best friend just moved here a few weeks before it hit, and her family had been in Katrina, so this was a huge struggle for her. I heard that 85% of the homes lost here did not have flood insurance, so like with you all, it's going to be a very long road to rebuild. It breaks my heart.

Plucky,
Thank you for your kind words.
I am just discovering that many of my friends didn't have flood insurance because it wasn't required.. My heart goes out to those who are being impacted by all of this.
My friend was not able to save anything. She was on the second floor...no flooding....but the winds must have picked up and blown dirty water on everything. She took her furniture to my place, cleaned it and hoped it would dry out.....but good grief the smell....and that was without the "flood waters" getting it.
It is a heartbreaking mess for everyone.
Stay safe plucky. ...round two is heading our way....
Clo
