Ileostomy question

Hello

I am a 40 year old male with Crohn's. I've had it since 1994 and had a J-Pouch surgery in 1998


In 2013 I had a temporary ileostomy put in only to have it reversed 3 months later.

I recently had an abscess and now the narrowing in my pouch in 2 places....

My doctors are recommending me for the permanent ileostomy

My body has now rejected Remicade and Humira........

Any thoughts? He has talked about Stelara now


My questions:
How has your Crohn's been since your Ileostomy?
What was the surgery like? How long did it take you to recover?

I had an ileostomy for 2 years and it was better to be honest. At least I was in remission, which I'm not now: after I had a reversal in 2015 the Crohn's came back. I didn't have a j-pouch though, the surgeon just connected me to my original rectum.

The ileostomy surgery was pretty straightforward. It only took an hour to remove my colon and give me an ileostomy, and there were no surgical complications afterwards. Physically I recovered pretty quickly; mentally I had a far harder time for reasons I feel too tired to go into right now. Most of them weren't to do with Crohn's anyway, but I did have a hard time psychologically accepting the stoma. That was just me though; some people have no trouble at all.

Just answered your other post first. To edit that if they are removing your jpouch and anus to make the ileostomy permanent your recovery will probably be a little more like that of a
Proctocolectomy.

I have Crohns colitis and have not been on medication since my surgery about 20 months ago. I have no symptoms and my crohns is in remission. It's been 20 months for me. I honestly don't even feel like i have Crohns anymore except for the bag on my tummy.

I wrote more about my recovery in your other post. There is one person I know of on the ostomy forum that recently had his jpouch removed and permanent ileostomy.
