Kudos to you for bringing up the subject of embarrassing flatulence. A topic most people with Crohn's struggle with and just don't talk about.
One time my wonderful husband came home embarrassed and humiliated by a flatulence-incident in the restroom at a sporting event. As my husband was using the facilities, he could hear some guy comment about the odor being so awful that he just couldn't stay in that restroom.
AND kudos to your GI for even mentioning that flatulence could be food related. Especially impressive because their medical training does not include much about food/nutrition and most of those in the medical field never make the connection between food and symptoms.
From the perspective of nutritional deficiencies and toxicities, many factors can contribute to flatulence. One example is aluminum toxicity. Sources of aluminum include medicines, water, table salt, baked goods, aluminum cookware, beverages in aluminum cans to name a few. Another example, sugars and carbs feed yeast in the gut and yeast produces a lot of gas.
This really surprised me ... one sign that nutritional deficiencies and toxicities have been successfully resolved is there is no more or very little gas AND stools have no odor!
