Hey guys,

Anyone have experiences with proctitis? I've been having bad rectal pain for quite some time now, moving around is uncomfortable, bowel movements are uncomfortable but sometimes relieve some of the pressure, sneezing and coughing is horrible pain.. I've been getting miserable being in constant butt pain lol. Finally went to a walk in today because I knew my GI wouldn't be able to get me in. The rectal exam was not fun to say the least, but the doc said he couldn't feel/see any abscess (good news!) but thinks it's super inflamed and prescribed me hydrocortisone acetate in an enema form? Unfortunately the pharmacy can't get it filled until Monday. Anyways, hoping this helps!! Does anyone have similar experiences and did this help? How long did it take to get the pain under control? I have a colonoscopy coming up in 2 weeks which I suppose will confirm the inflammation?

Gutsy, I am not sure how many here has dealt with proctitis. However, this is brought up quite frequently in the UC forum so you may want to post about this over there too.

I sure hope you can get some relief.

Rectal inflammation is our biggest issue with an Ulcerative Colitis diagnosis! You should have a full colonoscopy with biopsies. You should have a stool test to rule out infectious causes like a C Diff.

Rectal-route medications like suppositories or enemas do help greatly!

As previously mentioned, the ulcerative colitis forum might be more relevant to you!

Okay great thanks guys. Is that abnormal then to have Crohn's disease but suffer with proctitis?

It's not common to have rectum involvement with crohn's disease but, of course, anything is possible. With an UC there is ALWAYS rectal involvement with flares and its the bane of our existence (urgency, tenesmus, accidents, etc.).

I've suffered from proctitis for years. I'm a Crohnie w proctitis. I don't want to say this but mine is even resistant to Remicade. I use colifoam enema and pentasa suppositories when in severe pain. Cortiment (budesonide) lessened the number of flare ups but not as both me and my doctor have hoped it would. This is not to discourage you. We differ in our response to meds.

Oh thanks for sharing. The pain has been driving me nuts, i would really like to get it under control however it's really only been a few weeks I've been experiencing these symptoms. I'll have to see what the colonoscopy says and we can go from there with the plan for meds I guess. What a pain in the butt haha literally 😞

gutsycal, i also suffer from this. it is the last and most persistant area of my crohn's . of course all the rest has been removed. and aint nobody gonna cut on my butt! thats my 1 forever rule.

So it may not be proctitis after all. I went to the ER last night as I was in agony. Turns out I did have an abscess and got it drained. Still a bit sore as the drainage was incredibly painful, but definitely feel the pressure relieved!! Guess we will see if there is inflammation in the rectum when I have my colonoscopy done next week as the walk in doctor thought there was inflammation present.

What does proctitis feel like? I had an abscess over a year ago and had many drainage procedures. Ever since they started trying to drain it, I can't sit directly on my butt. Always sitting on my leg. Lately, it's been more painful again, however the MRI showed abscess is still there, but too small too drain. I'm wondering if maybe that isn't the issue and it may be proctitis instead? It hurts to stand and sit and even laying down it bothers me sometimes. It's hard to get comfortable. I have Crohns Colitis and have rectal disease. I'm wondering if that is my issue!!

Proctitis comes with a host of symptoms, but not really pain to sit. It sounds like the abscess might be the culprit.

Proctitis symptoms include frequency, blood in stool, urgency, tenesmus (feeling of needing to go, even when you've just gone, it can happen repeatedly and it feels like pressure even when there's nearly nothing there), mucous, sometimes skinny or loose stools but depends on the severity. It can also cause you to get hemorrhoids or fissures since you're going a lot and the consistency is poor. You really need to get checked out to find out what's going on.

My scope showed I have a stricture at my terminal ileum , but not much inflammation anywhere else that I know of. Trying to get the stricture under control with taking extra humira and seeing if that does anything! I have noticed that I have way less pain which is amazing, still having some D but definitely seems to be getting less frequent! I've also been on vacation for the last couple of weeks which could help with me feeling better because I'm super relaxed haha. I hope you are doing well also!!
