Update: My doctor thinks I may have a cut in my colon, so I will be taking steroid suppositories. Does anyone know what kind of surgery I need if it doesn't heal??

Oh right. Forget my question in your last thread >_>.

Need a bit more info really. Where is the cut meant to be? In the anus, rectum or colon? Reason I ask is that suppositories only reach the rectum, so if the cut is any higher than that suppositories won't reach it. That said, if you have proctitis (rectal inflammation) then the suppositories are still worth taking.

I've never heard of surgery for a cut in the colon, unless it's a perforation. That's when a hole goes all the way through the bowel wall and usually requires emergency surgery - if stool gets into the bloodstream that's not good news, to put it mildly.

Did you see the doctor or just speak to him over the phone? Are you feeling better now?

I still feel horrible.. I have a lot of left sided pain. My doctor said it would be in my colon.. She wants to wait until my fissures around my anus heals because a colonoscopy would make it worse she said. I will get a colonoscopy in a couple of months. I am taking suppository steroids to heal it. Is there anything else I should do?

I think enemas might have been a better bet, because they reach further up the colon than suppositories do. Or steroid foam enemas (which are easier to retain than the liquid enemas). But don't think there's a lot you can do now, except try the suppositories and wait to see if you get better.

Hot sitz baths multiple times a day are good for fissues, and a good protectant. Apply it before you use the bathroom each time. It's really difficult to get them to heal. Sometimes using stool softeners is a good idea if things are firm, but I doubt that's a problem for you considering your IBD. I am happy you got to see your dr. You really do need a scope to see what's going on. A cut sounds very vague. Wouldn't that be a perforation? In that case, you should have been admitted. I've never heard a doctor say "a cut" in the colon. Maybe they meant ulceration... not sure.

Yeah, I didn't see my doctor I just talked to her on the phone.. I am really scared.. She said there may be a cut in my colon so I have to do suppositories. The suppositories will heal it. We have to wait now 2 months for another colonoscopy and endoscopy.. Am I doing the right thing?

I think you're doing the right thing. Just take it day by day, watch it, stay in touch with the doctor if it gets worse and see how the new medicine reacts. It is hard to say since every one is so different but I can say I have had situations that sound similar to what you are going through. I have had times of colon inflammation/ulceration that give me pain on the left side. With crohns we sometimes go through some experiences that seem horrific but are just part of living and dealing with this disease and unfortunately there is a lot of waiting and watching. I had a flare quite a few years ago that caused a lot of significant bleeding until it was under control so its not abnormal with crohns but it shouldn't go untreated and requires close monitoring that you don't loose too much. have you had any more bleeding episodes?
would be good to clarify what is meant by cut though- ulcer or perforation?

A perforation is a hole. The bowel wall is quite thick and made up of several layers; a perforation would go through the entire wall, leaving a hole for the intestinal contents to leak through and cause infection, peritonitis and sepsis if left untreated. A cut is more superficial and may cause profuse bleeding if it's deep enough, but it's not the same thing as a perforation.

I mean, technically a fissure is a cut; I wonder if a fissure was what the GI was referring to. At any rate if she thought you had an intestinal perforation, MB, she would have admitted you into hospital. I think you're doing the right thing. You could also be anaemic from blood loss, so it's worth getting your iron levels checked out as well.
