Gumby is correct on how Miralax works. It is nothing like a laxative at all, meaning it does not work in a few hours. It will take several days to work, but take it every night at bedtime. It does not produce cramping, loose stools & stuff like many laxatives. Once things start moving stay with it. Another stool softner I see many here speak of here is Colace. I have no experience with it at ll. My grandson was on Miralax for a very long time & it was recommended by his pediatrician.

You mentioned a small bowel series, not sure about that one. I am going to guess you will be paying out of pocket for that one. I would consider finding out what facility the dr uses for his scopes & contact them to ask about payment arrangements. Considering your issues a scope would be much better so the dr can see inside & do biopsys.

about h-pyloria, its a germ/bacteria that gets in our stomachs. Even though we live in a country with clean water & such it is still easy to contract. I read an article quite some time ago on a medical site. They claim 2/3 of the population contracts h-pyloria & a vast majority have no idea they have it until symptoms appears. A lot of times it is found by accident. My gi tested me when I had a scope done & knew before the biopsys came back. He said I had it a very long time because the lining of my stomach had ridges & some ulcers. He was a little perturbed my prior gi drs never tested me. Like you I live in a very large city.

Here is something else to consider on the financial side of having a colonoscopy done. Not sure if your dr uses a hospital or an out patient clinic. Either way, a phone call to their financial office you can find out the cost. Explain your high deductible, ask if they will set up a payment plan & what discount they give for a cash paying patient. A couple of years ago my son needed a CT Scan of his chest. He has a $7,500 deductible. The facility said if we take you as a cash paying patient, no insurance involved we will charge you $300.00. Otherwise it would have been $1700. Like many, he has insurance but can't afford to use it.

Here is another option to consider, there is a company called CareCredit. You can apply for credit with them & the interest rate is low, not like a credit card & the monthly payments are not outrageous. You will see many drs offices & hospitals post their name. Not everyone has insurance & they have high deductibles. I know a lady personally, that needed a lot of extensive dental work done besides needing full dentures. She applied with them & was approved for up to $6,500 for her dental work. My sister used it too for dental work. So, this may be an option for you. This has become a big thing with medical & dental services. As popular as it has become there may be more companies out there that offer this.

Good luck with everything. I was on Pentasa for several years. I had a stricture in my ileum which progressed to a bowel obstruction and I needed re-section surgery. There are studies that seem to say Pentasa is not better than placebo in treatment of Crohn's, but there are people who really think it helps. If you have a stricture in your small intestine the SBFT should show it.
