blush I have had an ileostomy for 7 years due to severe ulcerative colitis, I also have crohns disease. I have had many complications and been on various streroids for different reason throughout the 7 years. I was scheduled an appointment for upper and lower endoscopy; I had 8 biopsies done. So far, I have a bacterial infection that they are attempting to treat...slow in response right now. Currently the GI is talking of beginning medication such as Remicade. Are this many biopsies normal?

Hi Tina & welcome to the forum. It sure sounds like you have had a long hard road dealing with these issues. As far as the multiple biopsy's yes this not uncommon, your dr was being thorough. Did you have the infection before or after the scope, or does the dr know? Hopefully the antibiotic will kick in & do it's job.

You mentioned possibly going on Remicade that would be an excellent choice. We see lots of success for both diseases with Remicade. Back when I was on it my dr also put all of his patients on Imuran too. He said the Imuran helped enhance the effects of the Remicade & helped against developing antibodies. You can go to Remicades website & see about using their patient assistance program. It helps cover the costs of co-pays & works with your insurance.

Yes, normal to have multiple biopsies taken during endoscopy (often 2 to 6 biopsies). Multiple biopsies are often taken randomly during endoscopy, and biopsies are also taken for specific features warranting further investigation (i.e., a patch of severe inflammation, a polyp, or anything unusual). Biopsy sites can take multiple days to heal, and you might see a little blood in stool until then.

I recently had upper and lower scopes. I had quite a few biopsies taken. I hope the infection clears up soon.

The biopsies were the most painful feeling I have ever endured in my life. I have a bacterial infection and today is supposed to the last of it; but on the way there now, and still hurting really good. I am having a difficult time getting around. I have a gastritis:mild irritation of stomach tissue. The first biopsies I ever did were not like this, they were normal. No sign of ileitis and no dysplasia seen. No intestinal metaplasia and no helicobacter pylori demonstrated. only mild chronic antral gastritis. This was supposed as the tissue samples from the biopsies. IDK, what I do know is I am tired all of the time, in pain, and have nausea. I have taken 30 pepto 262mg. capsule within the past 48 hours, I wish I had a real solution for this.

Tina, if I understood your post yesterday you were going to see your dr. If so, how did the appointment go with him?

Tina, I just recently had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and it surprisingly hurt. I've had a few in the past and I don't remember them hurting. But I don't seem to have any problems now. I was also just diagnosed with gastritis and I also seem to have nausea but not pain. My dr. prescribed 2 pantoprazole a day and it did cure the burning pain. Did your doctor not recommend any medication?

I don't know if this will be of any help but I eat in the morning with my pills and then I start to feel nauseous a couple of hours later which lasts for a few hours. I then have some semi-clear soup for lunch and sometime in the late afternoon I start to feel better and am able to eat some more.

So sorry that are not doing well I hope you get something to make you feel better. Please update us when you can.
