Concerns about possible blockage with cleans scopes

Hello Everyone,

I have not been on this site for a number of years since gratefully I have been well. Unfortunately that is no longer the case and I am once again not well. My doctors tend not to believe me when I tell them that I am not well and tests don't always find the problems I am having until I end up in surgery (too many.)

My question is: what is the best test to have in order to see blockages of the bowel? I am having a colonoscopy and endoscopy today but what scares me is that they will not find anything and I want to do more testing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

CT scan or an abdominal x-ray is usually used for diagnosing an obstruction. The doctor may also examine your stomach with a stethoscope - high-pitched whistling sounds can indicate an obstruction.

What are your symptoms?

I have unusual symptoms for me. I get up in the middle of the night a couple of time to go to the bathroom. At about 6:00 a.m. I get up take my pills and have coffee. A couple of hours later I feel like I want to throw up for 4-5 hours then I go to the bathroom and feel better for the rest of the day. I have been on clear fluids for a few weeks now.

Not sure what kind of pills you are talking about but have you tried eating a piece of toast or some crackers before taking your meds? Meds & coffee together are tough on an empty stomach. I am a morning coffee drinker & have to eat a little something before getting my first cup down.

There is nothing which sounds like an obvious obstruction from those symptoms... That said, a few weeks is a long time to stay on a clear fluids only diet. Are you being monitored by a dietitian or anyone? What made you go on a liquid diet in the first place?

Agree with NCOT, you don't seem to be symptomatic of a blockage. With a blockage you will find that you feel nauseas, are unable to defecate or even pass gas. You will feel the need for laxatives, as with a blockage it's not uncommom to go for quite a long time without have a bowel movement. As far as diagnostics go, an MRE would be the least invasive and safest. A CT scan is effective, but you'll be exposed to a considerable amount of radiation. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Coffee is a known laxative, and pills on an empty stomach always make me feel sick. You really need to have a much better breakfast. I'd suggest a smaller dinner as well, several hours before bedtime.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm afraid that I forgot how\where to type in a topic. I will be more careful next time I post.

I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy and it turns out that I have been diagnosed with gastritis and there is no sign of Crohn's. Good news\bad news results. I have been put on 2 PPI's a day and I have started to eat but it's all very new and a bit scary.

Mary, good news about the scopes being clear for CD. Try not to stress over the gastritis. Watch your foods for anything that can be irritating to the gut.

I took everyone's advice and did not take my pills on an empty stomach. Unfortunately not feeling much better. I am going to look up MRE and see if my doctor will order me one.

Mary, I gave your post a title, lol. I hope your dr will consider it, if nothing else if it comes back ok you will have peace of mind that this is not what is causing you issues. The only possible issue may be since the scopes are clean your insurance may not want to pay for an MRE.

I checked out gastroparesis on the Mayo Clinic website and it sounds pretty scary. It does explain some of my symptoms but I usually feel sick only in the morning afternoons and evenings are generally much better.

Thank you for mentioning but I really hope it is not what I have.

I find gastroparesis is MUCH easier to manage than my Crohn's.

My doctor sent a prescription for domperidone to a Canadian pharmacy, who then ships it to me. I also eat small, frequent meals instead of sitting down for large meals. It's fairly simple to diagnose - you go in on an empty stomach, eat some "radioactive" eggs, and an hour or two later they x-ray your stomach to see how far through the food has gone.

Also, coffee is a known laxative - it's something doctors recommend when someone is constipate. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, lol. And is there a way you could spread your pills out? When I take all my meds at the same time, I end up super nauseated for a while. So now I take some in the morning, but most of them at night. I also do gummies for as many of the vitamins as possible.

Really well right now, thankfully. This last Remi infusion did NOT land me in the ER like the last two did, so that was nice. And honestly, I don't even take the domperidone on a regular basis anymore. Just if I start having issues.

Eventually, living this way just becomes the new norm. You adapt to having fewer spoons than the average person.
