During a flare up, does anyone have success in using a liquid food substitute, like Ensure Plus? I'm in the process of a diagnosis so they have not prescribed me meds, but I am continuing to lose weight. I am scared that I will lose too much weight before I get meds. So would Ensure Plus help out?

Kitten, check out the BRAT diet, if I remember you are having lots of diarrhea issues. Ensure is ok to add to your diet as long as you can tolerate it. It should not be used as a meal replacement. Has your dr ordered stool tests to check for infections, parasites & other pathogens? If not request this test. I think you were waiting to be scheduled for a colonoscopy, is that set any time soon?

staydog they have not ordered any other tests yet. The colonoscopy is in a couple of weeks (Aug 6). I have been on the BRAT diet system since the upper endoscopy, but lately I have been throwing up what I eat and the diarrhea has not gotten any better. I hope they come back with answers soon, as I am very concerned about not being able to get any nourishment from food.

Hey kitten,

I could never see the sense in the brat diet. It doesn't provide proper nutrition, and it has fibre which is a problem during flare ups.
Ensure plus, with other liquids such as clear broths and electrolytes, can definitely sustain you and provides all the nutrients needed. It isn't meant to be a long term diet, but if you can drink slowly, and not throw up, it will give you nutrition and rest your bowels to some extent.

Kitten, I am not sure how fast your gi’s office responds to calls, but I would call his nurse & ask for a stool test. She can ask the dr on your behalf. For that matter your PCP can order it for you. You may want to see your PCP about getting something like Zofran to take for nausea. I don’t know if you are throwing up just when trying to eat only, but be careful not to become dehydrated, go to ER if you have to.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling to get answers.

Liquid diet can (mostly temporarily in adults) induce remission. It has done in me. I had a NJ feeding tube for two months. I now continue with 1,200kCal a day from nutridrinks (mine are Resource 2.0 +fibre by Nestle) and the rest from slightly restricted diet. These drinks are a nutritionally complete liquid. I believe I will be on it probably for the rest of my life.

Not sure where you are located but if it’s in the UK, NHS are very unlikely to prescribe it so you might need to pay. I highly reccomend it though.

BTW I’m not in remission anymore but these drinks definitely help with keeping it calmer.
