After several years of seeing GI doctors and having colonoscopies, I have finally been given a diagnosis and started treatment with Humira. But the diagnosis wasn't from inflammatory bowel disease. It was ankylosing spondylitis or enteropathic arthritis that was given to me by a Rheumatologist. I was having difficulty getting a diagnosis from my GI, so I began seeing a Rheumatologist for the extreme joint pains. Should I bother going back to a GI, since I am already taking Humira for the joint pain? Is it necessary to have this diagnosis also?

How many scopes have you had done, when was your last, and were they always clear?
What GI symptoms have you been dealing with?
You might want to have a GI monitor your condition with annual visits or something like that, plus occasional colonoscopies (every few years?).

I've done 2 in 3 years, from two different GI's. They both clearly had totally different methods. The bloodwork, stool sample, and biopsy all showed inflammation and Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies high, but the first GI didn't make a diagnosis based on what he saw on the colonoscopy. I then went to a different GI for a second opinion. This guy did a colonoscopy but didn't do any biopsies. He refused to make a diagnosis. I then went back to the first GI who then wanted to do another colonoscopy, and I said no.

It sounds like you need yet another opinion. You need to have a colonoscopy and biopsies taken to confirm your diagnosis. Even though you're taking Humira, you still want to confirm a Crohn's diagnosis. You may need to alter your treatment plan in the future, and having a definitive diagnosis is very important.

MrAnxiety069 - The inflammation found on the biopsies were in the rectum area. The IBD screen was done the at the last visit, which showed Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies are high, which could indicate Crohn's. The GI's never checked the small bowel. After the last visit with the GI, I was so annoyed and desperate for treatment that I went to see a Rheumatologist for the arthritis.
My GI symptoms include bloody diarrhea that never goes away. The second GI I saw 'wrote off' all of my symptoms, claiming that the blood was from hemorrhoids and advised me to take Imodium for the diarrhea. LOL!

Handyman, the ASCA is not used to diagnose a patient. Sometimes when a patient has something to show up on the scope or biopsy report, that it is not clear if its UC or crohns, the ASCA testing can help determine which one it is. Do you have a copy of the the biopsy report from the one dr? I would get a copy of my scopes from both drs. If you do in fact have hemorrhoids it will be in these records. Now, may be the time to entertain the thought of seeing a 3rd gi, not associated with any that you have seen at this time. Have a scope with biopsy's & go from there.
What testing did your rheummie do to give the dx of AS? Take care.

straydog - The Rheummie did an x-ray and MRI, which showed sever damage to the sacroiliac joints, and she confirmed it (inflammation) with bloodwork. The joint pain has stopped since starting the Humira, but the bowel symptoms are only 50% better. Most of the bleeding has stopped, but the loose stools still come and go. The fatigue and uveitis are still there. I'm taking 40 mg and done only one injection.
The first doctor said that there were no hemmoriods, while the second doctor said that there were. I doubt that this large amount of bleeding could be caused by hemmoriods. That would be laughable if this doctor could see what is coming out of me. He was most likely incopetent or just didn't care much. Unfortunatly, its expensive, invasive, and a real "pain in the ***" to have to keep having colonoscopies done.

Handyman, you may want to consider getting copies of all of your testing that has been done. If you have done scopes recently, another gi would probably accept it & you may not need another scope. It would be worth trying. You really need a 3rd opinion since you have conflicting drs.
