I'd love to hear about how you manage cravings for foods you know will make you ill. Dairy is off limits for me, unfortunately, and I can't seem to get over pizza cravings. They stay with me for days, and I often give in, briefly enjoy, and then within an hour feel lousy and regret it. Similarly, I have huge sugar cravings, particularly for soda, but know it increases inflammation, and I don't need any more of that.

I have a friend with celiacs disease, and she gets violently ill immediately after eating even a little gluten. I'd never wish that level of severe illness on anyone, but part of me knows that if the consequences were more severe I might be better able to resist cravings. Instead, the anxiety and hyper focus of a 'forbidden' food builds up until I'd rather satisfy the anxiety than avoid the GI discomfort.

How do you maintain discipline and handle feeling deprived? Thanks!

If you don’t mind me asking how do you feel after eating those meals that like soda and pizza what kind of g I symptoms do you have ? My friend has trouble with the same thing but subsides after about 30 mins or after a bowel movement does alcohol bother you ?

I know what you mean. Ice cream is one thing that really bothers me when I eat it. Most of the time I can walk away from it but every once in a while I give in to the temptation knowing that I will spend the next few hours regretting that decision, but like you I think if the reaction was bad enough I would I would not give in. So far it has not got that bad!

I don't drink alcohol, as I feel slow and sluggish the next day, but never miss it. Usually it's dairy causing diarrhea and moderate pain that gets me.

A few years ago I noticed during periodic blood work that my fasting blood sugar was gradually rising into the prediabetic range. There is diabetes in my immediate family. So about 10 years ago I started measuring my fasting blood sugar first thing every morning.

I noticed that just one can of soda would elevate my sugar for several days. I have no doubt that if I didn't keep myself honest by checking my blood sugar every day that I would have full-blown diabetes by now. Fortunately some of the same foods I need to avoid for my blood sugar are the same foods I need to avoid for my IBD.

I think I would cheat with diet more often if only worried about loose stools morphing into a flare, but I am really frightened about becoming a diabetic. The good news is that cravings don't last forever. Once you avoid indulging in food cravings for a while you lose your desire for those foods that you once thought were irresistible.

OP, I wonder if you would do ok with cauliflower pizza? My fav brand is Caulipower veggie pizza. Still has dairy. Just an idea. There seems to be so many substitutes for so many fav foods now. Some of them are just junk but sometimes you find one that will satisfy your craving with no ill effects.
