Crohns without Surgery

Seems like many here have had some type of surgery or resection. Curious how many years did you have crohns before surgery. Also, how many years have others had crohns and didnt need surgery yet.. I read that at least 70% of people at some point will need it but depends on which articles you read

It took about 12 yrs before my first resection and then another 7 before my second. Some of changing data is the new biological and how they are helping many

Everything depends on the extent of the disease & how well a person responds to the medications. There are more medications available now to treat patients, many do not ever need surgery.

When I first joined HW, I had already had a resection & was really sick. It was helpful to me to have a place to see how others handled life in general. I learned a great deal from the members. Nearly every one of those members are no longer active here. I like to believe they are doing well & living life.

6 years after diagnosis, I had my first resection. Then, 10 years later I had my second resection. Throughout that time, I've been on 6-MP. Most recently in the last couple of years I've been on Inflectra (Remicade generic) and 6-MP. That combination seems to be working for me. No pain, but only dealing with ramifications of a shortened bowel from the two resections.

I've had crohn's for 22 years now without the need for surgery(36 y/o). I have always responded well to medication and when I came off medication I have been able to stay in remission around five years or so until I have another flare. I remember having one colonoscopy while not taking any medication about ten years ago and I had no signs of active inflammation, just a bit of scar tissue.

I also hope to avoid having surgery, but we never know. Also the statistics of needing sugery due to crohn's from the past do not necessarily reflect the outcomes of the future because of the new medications available as well as new medications that will be available in the near future.

Never been in remission. Was d/x with UC in 2011. Had first of two jpouch surgeries in 2016 and then in early 2017. And spring of 2018 was d/x with crohns.

I’ve had crohns for ~10 years and have not needed surgery. I’ve been in remission for about the last 2.5 years. Had a fistula and stricture over the course of those 10 years. Almost needed surgery for that but it was dealt with through 2 dilation procedures during a colonoscopy which allowed me to avoid surgery. Currently on remicade and 6mp to keep things in check.

Older data says that about 70-80% of people with Crohn's will have at least one surgery. Many need more than one surgery.

But that data was collected before biologics became so commonly used. They may improve the numbers substantially, but then again, they might make only a small difference. To be determined...

As for me, diagnosed about 12 years ago after 20 years of on/off issues. No surgeries for Crohn's, but many surgeries for other things.
