Remicade AFib Blood Thinners and Stroke

Anyone have experience with Remicade and stroke?
Brother has Crohns and in hospital right now for 4th stroke. Had blood clot in leg and AFib this year also On Remicade for the last year only. Docs at large univ hospital are meeting today to figure out next step Head Cardiologist just told my sister “We don’t need to consult his GI Doc about Remicade interaction” to figure out what blood thinner to try next! They are thinking Coumadin.

Hello & welcome to Healing Well. So sorry to read about your brother. I don't recall reading about anyone on Remicade having a stroke. I have heard some members say their gi's say crohns patients can clot faster & can have blood clots, however, none of my gi's has ever told me that.

Has the drs said what caused all of this? Does he have a history of cardiac problems? Are you saying all of these strokes has happened since being on Remicade? Afib can be treated many ways. My husband has Afib & ended up with a pacemaker. Both of us have a history of blood clots, he is on Warfarin & I have one of those filters.

I can understand the drs wanting to get all of the heart issues stable. Being on a blood thinner puts him at some risk, which I am sure the drs has explained this to him & his wife. Please keep us posted on how he is doing.

As far as I know, Coumadin and Warfarin will not interact with Remicade. I'm on a double dose of Remicade every 6 weeks, and I've had a blood clot before. The clot and multiple hospitalizations have made it so I've been on both of those blood thinners at times, with no issue from my GIs.

The only cause for concern will be to keep an eye on his Crohn's symptoms. If he starts having cramping/flare-like symptoms, he'll need to see his GI quickly. A GI bleed while on bloodthinners could be a big problem.

A-fib itself can cause clots to form. Clots cause stroke. Many people with A-fib are placed on medication to prevent the clotting issue. My father-in-law had a stroke because the doctor at the Army hospital didn't place him on meds when he was diagnosed with A-fib.
