Humira causing Psoriasis

My daughter is taking Humira for Crohn's and it is helping her crohn's symptoms. For the last 8 months, she has been getting psoriasis, which is getting worse, and the GI and dermatologist told us that this is a side effect of Humira. Is there anything that can be done? I do not want to discontinue Humira as it appears to be helping with Crohn's.

This is such a tough question. You really don't see this occurring so you might not get many replies here. Ironically, and paradoxically, Humira is used as a treatment for Psoriasis(?). That would certainly leave the question of what to do about it? Has your daughter been on any other anti-TNF's to treat her Crohn's? If not, then a transition to Remicade might be tried, but I'm no expert in this area.

Really hope you get the answers to this dilemma, and are able to move forward successfully. Keep us posted.

Humira gives me very itchy skin. Even my head itches badly some days. I would say mild psoriasis nothing that is deeply red or bleeding or anything of that nature.

Many things help with this though. Dandruff shampoo helps alot. Using lotion right after the shower.
Trying to keep the rooms humidified with a humidifier especially in the winter where the heat makes the air dryer and not sitting in front of any kind of space heater. The more I am exposed to things that dry out the skin the more I will try to lotion and moisturize. Drinking plenty of water too of course not letting yourself get dehydrated.

There is only one thing that will eliminate this completely. Taking oral steroids will stop it real fast. Not budesonide I mean a systemic one like hydrocortisone(cortef) or prednisone(I don't take prednisone just using it as an example). I will sometimes take a single dose of steroids if this gets unbearable and it will stop for a while and stop fast like wow I can't believe that worked so well.

I also find it odd how they use humira to treat this condition but have no intelligent answer for it.

I was in a similar position with Remicade, which caused me to have dyshidrotic psoriasis (blisters that turn into psoriasis) on my hands and feet. 73monte is right, it's a hard decision. Ultimately, I ended up stopping Remi because in my mind, if I'm trading one condition for another...am I really helping heal my body?? True, the psoriasis wasn't as debilitating as Crohn's, but it made using my hands and feet hellish, which isn't something I could ignore.

I bounced around to 2 more medications before finding Stelara. I'm doing well on it, except for the cost.

If your daughter's psoriasis is somewhat manageable, you may be able to hang with Humira for a bit longer. How does she feel about it? One thing to consider: if Humira is causing this reaction, Remicade may do the same, since their formulation is so similar (my GI skipped putting me on Humira for this reason).
