Let me tell you my experience with imuran. I'm not allergic. And I'm back on it after 7 abdominal surgeries including a colectomy. Here's why
I was on 100 mg consistently. I was in remission. Over the years, I was doing so great, I gained weight. My top weight ever was 60 kg. So I thought: imuran goes by weight, I must up my dose. Said, done, 150 mg. Within 3 weeks I started having lose stool. Mucus. Diarrhea. Blood. I was flaring. Oh no. I had previously told my GI that I want surgery if I ever flare again. He was trying to save my colon. Nope, I want surgery. Three step surgery done. Jpouch connected. Imuran stopped. I'm doing badly. Ulcers in mouth and genitals. I need to be back on Imuran. I try 100 mg again. Ulcers heal. Doctor says I need to up my dose because of my weight. OK, 150 mg. Three weeks later ulcers come back. I can't sit, I can't pee without burning pain. She has me go off of imuran. Ulcers intensify. No, I need to be back on it. This time I stay on 100 mg. Ulcers heal again. I consult with obgyn and rheumatologist and we agree to stay on 100 mg period. All is well.
Knowing this, I could have kept my colon! Life sucks
