Adalimumab throughout pregnancy-baby with suppressed immune system

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone used Adalimumab (humira/amgevita l) throughout their pregnancy up to birth? If so, did you take any particular precautions with your baby having a suppressed immune system? If so, what measures and how long did you take these measures?

Did you get your baby tested for antibodies at any point? Just wondering what is wise re:visitors, travel etc with the baby as I know it can be potentially in the system for 6 months, but I wonder how feasible to take such protective measures for half a year and if that is OTT?

Might not be the best person to respond here being male, but I have read several/many post over the years from expectant Mothers with the same concerns. The follow up from what I've seen has been fine, and haven't heard of any issues during or afterwards while on anti-TNF's.

I seem to recall a member here having two "Remicade babies" without issue. Hopefully some other will chime in though.

I think the doctor doing the most work in this space is Dr. Mahadevan, through the PIANO study and the like: https://gastroenterology.ucsf.edu/piano. I'd do some digging around the results they've published so far and/or reach out to UCSF potentially.

I did some digging around in the archives here & from what I read the ladies that were on Remicade, their drs stopped doing infusions several weeks close to the due date. From everything I read Remicade does does not cross into the placenta, where as some studies I read said Humira does.

Drs tell their patients when considering getting pregnant, they should be in excellent health & have a good solid remission 6 months prior to becoming pregnant. Hormones while pregnant can causes flares in some women, while others do not.

I would have a good conversation with my drs about Humira, also ask if they stop Humira so many weeks before the due date.

Thanks all but I’m afraid you all misunderstood my question!
My question is for those who did take humira throughout pregnancy, what precautions (if any) did you adopt for your baby and for how long, e.g not having visitors, extra cautious about sanitising hands, not bringing the baby overseas etc. That type of thing, not the baby outcome due to the medication/is it safe etc!
Any experiences related to my question is appreciated

Hi! I'm currently pregnant with my 4th, and I've been on Remicade (so super similar to Humira) for all four of my kids throughout the pregnancy.

I try to time my infusions so that I am due for a dose the day after I have the baby (I have to have c-sections due to an unhealed recto-vaginal fistula).

Then after the baby is born, there is a small amount of medication in their system that studies show (I think it was the MELODY trial) that it lasts up to six months in their system. It does NOT pass through breastmilk (the proteins are too large), so I make sure I breastfeed (I pump instead of nurse).

Then we don't go anywhere for 3-6 months, and we don't do any LIVE vaccinations for the first 6 months to a year. There's only one on the schedule that is live in that year, but I can't remember what it's called. Every pediatrician knows what it is, though, so just tell them no live vaccines.

I also follow the vaccine schedule (instead of modified) so that baby gets as much protection as possible.

I know Remicade isn't exactly the same as Humira, but I hope this helps.

Thanks so much Scifigal2k! Great to hear your experiences as while I’m aware of the medical aspect of it, it’s the parenting part with keeping the little one safe from infections that I’m clueless about! smile thanks again for your post!
