I was diagnosed of Crohn's in 1994 by colonoscopy, with multiple ulcers in cecum and terminal ileum, mucosal changes from sigmoid colon to rectum. I have since been treated by Chinese herbal medicine for the past 29 years. Last month I posted that my small bowel partial obstruction is getting worse, and finally I had small bowel resection surgery where the the colorectal surgeon removed 80 cm of my small intestine containing 11 strictures.
Colonoscopy: after the first one, I had 4 more colonoscopies from 1998-2023 with all confirming Crohn's is gone from my colon and terminal ileum (TI). I think those Chinese herbs must have played some role in healing my colon and TI. The colonoscopy can only reach 25-30 cm into the TI, but I have about 50 cm of healthy TI.
Strictures higher up in ileum: those strictures grew slowly over the years. In 2000, an upper GI series with small bowel follow through found mid small bowel with Crohn's with the bowel lumen narrowed and loops separated. In 2007, CT scan confirmed the presence the stricture. So I have had strictures for at least 16 years until surgery. During those 16 years, I lived mostly productive life, traveling with my family and working full-time. But in 2023, those strictures finally got me, which prompted urgent surgery.
Should I continue just the Chinese herbal medicine or should I also include Remicade infusion?
Reason for not including Remicade: I have latent TB. I am worried about the side effects of treating latent TB and using Remicade. I am allergic to a lot of drugs. Once I was prescribed cough suppressant, I took it and became so nauseous and immediately threw up. Since the herbs helped me for 29 years, maybe they can help me with another 29 years, at that time I will be 86. I do not expect to live that long.
Reason for including Remicade: studies have shown that Remicade can prevent post operative Crohn's recurrence. I do not want another surgery within 10 years or so.
What is your thought? Thanks
