Almost two weeks ago I had and endoscopy (first time)and colonoscopy (fourth time). I have never, never experienced such pain from the scope before. I have always been awake and viewed the process. Not this time. To say the least, it was brutal. My Crohn's has expanded to my entire colonic region, with severe CD in my descending colon. My GI said there was severe inflammation and constriction. He took eight biopsies. I was writhing in pain the entire time! Afterward, I was suffering from gas trapped in my colon. When I asked the doctor for something to help me release the gas because the pain was intolerable, I could not believe my ears when I heard his crude response. "All you need to do is fart." This is a direct quote! Can you believe that? How medically irresponsible of him to make such a flippant/dismissive comment, given the fact that HE was the one telling me how much inflammation, mucus and blood (from the biopsies) was in my system. He of all people should know that blood and mucus will block the passage of gas in a constricted colon. I suffered for five days in pain. Eventually, I began vomitting, which gave me relief. He is one of the nations foremost GIs, and I truly feel he knows his business...but I feel he was way out of line with this comment. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle this situation, but thanks for letting me vent!
