i have been resurrected.....just wanted to say hello to everyone and let you know i am back.....i had to do some self-discovery for a while
anyway, wanted to say i am feeling pretty good, but it can be so frustrating dealing with this, i have been great since my surgery to get a temp ileostomy, however, I am still having fistula related problems....
i am starting to think I should have had a total colectomy instead of messing with the idea of this temporary solution....now i think i might just keep this ostomy forever instead of having it reversed?
I know this isn't the ostomy forum, but have any of you others had a temp ileostomy, and then ended up keeping it instead of getting it reversed?

They finally let you back..; )..
I, myself do not have an ostomy(yet)..but I read that it is kinda common for people just to keep it after a while....my ? to you..is it really that bad?.. I read the ostomy forum time to time and most people on there do not seem to mind..I mean I'm sure they don't like it..but it seems like coming to terms with having it is the worst part..not the daily living life with it..
when are you supposed to be able to have it reversed?..
Welcome back!

I think one person on here has done that but not sure who. Since my reversal 9 weeks ago I still have my days where I wish I had the ostomy still, but I dont miss the bag, the abscess drain etc. Darn peritonitis from the abscess I had would not have gotten better without surgery nor would the abscess. My stoma never healed right causing feces to seep under my skin. Infectin wise I am free now yay...not to get my bowels to act normal...somedays I have D up to 8 times other days I am boated and wish I could go...finally go after a while but its uncomfortable

The person you need to talk to is Judy89. She has an ostomy and is hanging onto it. Good luck.

My ostomy is still considered temporary because I still have my rectum. They keep electing not to remove it because my surgeries are too complicated since I've had so many.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes, my ostomy was supposed to be temporary, 17 years ago. I've had 5 resections since then, and they recently moved it to the right side, and removed my entire colon, so it's now officially an ileostomy. My surgeon asked me if I ever thought about having it reconnected and I had a panic attack, lol. Please don't let me wake up with it reconnected. I have a life now. I can work, play, walk, run, ride, do anything I want to do.
I had a real hard time dealing with it at first, and when I asked my surgeon when I was going to be reconnected, he said it would be senseless as I'd have to keep having it done and reversed. I felt cheated because he told me it was temporary. As time went on, I realized how nice it was not being chained to a bathroom, or embarassed at work, or in the mall. This is much easier to deal with. Accidents still happen, but once you get the hang of it, they're pretty rare.
The decision is yours, you can always opt to not have it reversed. My surgeon is a little worried about still having a rectum, I guess the risk of cancer is higher, but I have it checked and biopsied any time they have to put me under for another test, and no changes after 17 years.
