Yea, I know its spelled wrong. I'm too lazy to go look at the script, but I will start this new med this week and drop Imuran. Point is I will be able to take allapurinall again and maybe slow down the kidney stones. The question is,,,whats this stuff going to do to me?? anyone else on it???

Hi Sniper, Iv'e been on methotrexrate for 4 years,so i don't build anitiboties to the remicade.I started at 25 mgs. once a week for 12 weeks, then cut back to 15 mgs per week once a week injected.Iv'e noticed my gums have recessed alot have to use senistive tooth paste and a soft brush,as far as helping with joint pain it has not helped at all,joints still hurt if not more than before.Whose are the only 2 things i have noticed but who knws what else it could be doing.I will be having a liver biopsy done on the 13th to see what the metho. is doing to my liver.I have blood tests done every month checking for any changes in my liver.hope this helps. How is your wife doing ,good I hope.

Sniper -- so good to see you, how's your wife doing? How are you doing?

I've been using MTX for almost 3 years now. Monthly blood tests and a prescription for folic acid are crucial. I'm at 17.5 mgs injected (.7 ml) - have been here for 2 years now. It has helped tremendously with my RA & AS - my rheumy had me stay on the MTX when we switched me over to Remicade. Haven't had any problems...other than the normal initial side effects. The side effects can be minimized with the folic acid... Good luck...as scary as the color is and the medicine itself is, it has helped me quite a bit. Hope it works for you.

Good to see ya buddy! How is your wife (is it Camillia?) doing? Been thinking about her got the Komen foundation on campus this week.
I love my mtx shots! (oral meds get upchucked) I am at 20mg (when I go lower my bowels start acting up the day or two before the shot). I actually have a freaking life again. I can move and have fun. The med is neon yellow and will turn your skin yellow around the injection for a couple of days. I take 2 mg of folic acid a day.

Hi Sniper, good to see you i'm also on mtx .I take 20mg. a week i take the oral mtx and i have to say it took me a good while before it didn't kick my butt. I'm good now and i also take 1mg. of folic acid a day.Please give us an update on your wife you and mrs. sniper take care and God be with you. Kay

I was supposed to start MTX a week ago. You are required to take at least 1 mg Folic Acid with it, unfortunately I cannot tolerate the Folic Acid so I didn't even get the chance to try the Methotrexate. Hope it works well for you.

Yes Sniper I would like to know how your wife is as well.Please let your wife know that I am thinking of her and you as well.Sniper you didn't say if you will be taking the pill form of methotrexate or the shot form?When I was on methotrexate I opted for the shot form because my dad was on it as well and he started out on the pill form and it would make him sick for a couple of day's.Good luck and let us know how you are doing on it.

I was initially exhausted at first now I am fine with it
I take mine orally as well as my folic acid as posted that and MONTHLY blood tests a must

Thanks everyone. The metho will be in pill form ,for now anyway, and yes folic acid will be part of the equation. Would like to know more about the shot form though. Where is it injected and is it like insulin needles. Neon yellow sound like a new twist,,,will I glow in the dark??The main thing is I will be back on allapurinal , and maybe I wont have so many kidney stones. Hate those trips to the ER,, they worry my wife and I dont want to do that.
She is doing about as well as can be expected. Her hair has fallen out and that bothers her some. She wont wear a wig though, prefers to wear scarves and hats. I think she is beautiful in either. She has started her second month of chemo and will have treatments until Nov. Then another drug for a year. By the way doc said metho may cause hair loss in me. Big deal,,at least my wifes hair will grow back. I kid her about hers being temporary but mine is permanent. Thanks for careing and for the enfo...

I give myself shots in my stomach and on the tops of thighs in the winter -- rotation is key! I use insulin needles as they are really thin and sharp and do the trick with no problem. The folic acid should help eliminate hair loss/thinning quite a bit. It should also grow back once you've stabilized.

I wondered if I would glow in the dark when I first saw the liquid - scared the daylights out of me. It's hilarious when it's delivered to my office -- big stickers "WARNING BIOHAZARD - CHEMO DRUGS." Little bitty bottles in a big box marked as such has caused some hilarious moments here.

All the best to your wife as she starts her second month of chemo. My thoughts are with both of you during this time.

I am just starting Methotrexate, but my doc has not started me on any folic acid...I am going to see him in a month or so...maybe it can wait till then?

My doc seems to building up my dose using the oral medication. I am starting at 10mg a week for two weeks, then 20mg once a week for 4 weeks and then 25mg for 4 weeks. Intense!

Do you all find the side effects quite mild? I am guessing nausea is the big one.

I can't take oral meds they make me vomit. So I take both MTX and folic acid by shots and I use the diabetic needles for both sub-q in the abs (make sure you use antibodic bandaids, the MTX injection area gets infected really easy).

I have lost some hair from MTX but I am okay with it ........

I was offered this back in 1993, but declined. I had read of the side effects of MTX elsewhere & Cancer chemo was the first thing that came to mind when my Gastro mentioned it.

The drug has been around for quite a while, and as such its side effects are well understood. However, I do not look forward to a liver biopsy at any point.

Its good to see you, James.  And I'm happy to hear Camilla is doing as well as she can be.

I never took Meth.  I hear the guys that smoke it get the best buzz, though.  I just shoot up Humira and pop speed (Prednisone) from time to time.

How you doing Ken? Glad to see you. Yea, guess I Am a drugie too. Sometimes I just want to throw all the meds away and let what happens happen. But the other side of no meds is not good so I stick it out. Watching the chemo do its work on my lovely wife is about all I can stand right now so guess the crap I take is not all that bad.

MTX is a good med for what its worth and yes it is a Chemo drug BUT it is alot safer IMHO than some of the other meds taken ....MY doc said the same thing about MTX versus Imuran ..........

Yeah, I know that NOW but it scared me silly when he offered it in 93 right after my CD dx. Too much med student disease towards cancer & its meds. ( This was only 4 years after I had had a Melanoma scare so please understand my feeling at the time.)
If any offered it to me during a flare nowdays I'd take it, no problem. Compared to pred? Well I have several meds with side effects..

Just wanted to let you know I recently had a liver biopsy. I was terrified, but it was pretty easy. I didn't feel anything except the needle they used to numb me, which really wasn't so bad.

Judy89. Is the liver biopsy a standard thing or did you have to have one for a reason?? I had one many years ago and dont recall it being that bad but am not in a big hurry to have another one..
