well a mnth ago i had a barium xray to see hw bad my crohns was in my small intestine,afta waiting 4 hours the radiolooogist tld me i dnt had crohns and walked ofso i though he knew wat he was doing i believed him and now it turns ot that i do actually haf crohns in my small intestine so i was quite upset by that news also my doc thinks that one of my lil ulcer things is infected so he has given me some antibiotics for it, so is it serious hafin a infection? also i get tummy pains nw wn i eat so im trying some losec to see if it helps,my doc thinks it cld be crohns in my stomach. so i haf had a pretty crap week. neway thanks, bye

dont know about where you are, but in texas its very illegal for anyone other than your dr to tell you test results.

this person could and would lose his job here.

his job, a radiologist (not a tech) is to read the test and send a written report to the dr who then reads it, confirms it, and tells you.

my guess is this was a tech, not a MD and indeed needs a lesson in what his/her job actually is.

a tech does the xrays. a radiologist is a MD specializing in reading and interpreting xrays and other tests.

Radiologists are MDs. They interperet the tests themeslves, that is their whole raison d'etre. He told you exactly what he should have, that he didnt see evidence of crohn's on your test.

It might have been nice if someone had explained to you that the barium xray isn't a great test for it to begin with. It doesn't pick up small ulcerations or apthae-like lesions. That is a common shortcoming of this test.

A better test for small bowel involvement is a pill-cam that you swallow and let take pictures as it travels through you.

And some radiologists leave a lot be be desired when it comes to recognizing Crohn's signs. I've quit using our local hospital's radiology department because they've contracted out with a local radiology group, which cost them some of their best radiologists. A patient can't schedule a procedure with a specific radiologist anymore. And I've used this hospital since I was a kid in grammar school! My mother worked there in insurance and payroll all the while I was growing up. I played in the excavation for their first addition. I volunteered there for years.

Well Im going to school for Radiology, once I get out and get a job you can come see me and Ill make sure it gets done right :-)

indeed a radiologist is a MD. however, speaking for here, texas, they dare not tell ya what the results are. we never even see one. they read them, send the report to the dr who requested the test, he/she reads that and eventually calls to tell ya the results.

that is why i said what i did. they would never give us our results...only the dr who is seeing us can.

altho a barium wont show crohns, usually.

lol, mcgiver, hope you got about 10 yrs to go to school. 4 college, 4 med school, several more in residency and training.

the rads here dont even perform the tests, only techs do that. wow, what a diff there is!

thanks! i was confused as to y he even sed nething 2 me i found his people skills absolutly crap! well frm nw on ill only trust my doc! couldnt do the cam u swallw coz my doc was worried it mite of gotten stuck in my illium it was quite swollen at the time and still is!

I am a radiologist, and I have Crohns. I don't know who you were dealing with a tech or an MD, so I can't speak for  them.

What I can tell you is that the small bowel series is not 100% effective in diagnosing Crohns in the small bowel. It's a very good test, but not perfect, which may explain yopur confusing results.  In fact none of  the tests are 100% accurate, which is why it may take up to a year to diagnose IBD.
