CT scan w rectal and iv contrast today

HI,

 

Today is the day!  Im hoping they will either find or confirm that i dont have a fistula, an abscess, or a partial blockage.  This rectal crohns is now impacting my pelvic region so i am very concerned.  Heres my question... When i had a small bowel series it took forever for that barium to get to my small bowel and then i needed laxatives to get it out.  It was like a rock in me.  What should i expect from rectal contrast?  I have been drinking lots of water.  I am also on mirilax.  Should that be enough?  I wonder if ill even be able to hold it in in the first place!  How long will it be before i know the results?  How long will the whole procedure take and whats it like?  Im nervous.  Thanks.

Never had this test, so I don't have any procedural advice for you, but did want to wish you good luck with the test. Let us know your results. God Bless.

The test doesn't take all that long as I remember it. And they do have a small balloon type of apparatus to hold the inserted barium in during the procedure and after the scanning they suction most of the barium out before letting you off the table. Its really not all that much different than the the lower GI barium xrays procedure.

Ok done!  So i walk in and they insisit i drink the barium too.  And im like, ah no my doc specifically said do not drink it.  Last time i did for the small bowel series it was a nightmare.  So they kept referring to me as "refusing" to drink the barium like i was being defiant!  Finally they got in touch with my doctor who said NO!  So they did the enema barium.  Wow that was icky with the balloon.  But they do take it out after which is quite a relief.  Then...on top of all that, they had a hard time with the iv.  Was stuck and probed many times.  I now have a welt the size of a super ball on my vein.  Lets just hope i get some quick results or at least some results that offer a solution!

Hi Glad you got the test done and lets hope for fast results. I had it done too and did not mind it. I didn't have the IV though.I know when I was in the hospital they stuck me alot. Wow I don't like that. Have a good rest and let out a big sigh. lol gail
