 My son was diagnosed with Crohns disease about 15 months ago. He went up and down on Prednisone with little success and is now on Remicade about every 5 to 6 weeks which has helped alleviate D yet he continues to have rectal pain especially when he does a lot of movement. He is in a few singing groups and must dance a bit for perfomances. How can one tell if the cause of this pain is just inflamation. Could it be an abcess? Do you have to have a CT scan to differenciate between inflamation and an abcess, or is it possible to tell by the pain symptoms etc. Thanks for your help.

there are a lot of stuff for rectal pain - creams, suppositories, enemas, foams, etc. they all work to varying degrees. creams are good for after you drop the kids off at the pool to alleviate the pain of a sting ray. the rest are better for night time cos you get medicine on the affected area. i've found that hot baths work well and so does the hot tub. as for it being inflammation or an abscess, who knows. abscesses can burst on their own, which if you're not ready can be a bloody mess (no pun intended). if it is super bad, see your GI or a colorectal surgeon to have it lanced. it feels tons better after it is popped. they put you on a short burst of antibiotics afterwards just in case. as for myself, i've found that humidity can exacerbate things so when i feel a case of swamp ass coming on i dont do a lot of walking around and the such since it is generally a precursor for a bad sting ray.

I also get a lot of pain back there and I have no idea what it could be! Im amazed by how people seem to be able to tell if they have a fissure, fistula, abscess, I have NO IDEA!

what kind of pain is it?  Is it a sore, achy feeling, stabbing or does it just hurt after going diaherra???

I think it is a sore but not stabbing pain. It seems to ohurt him more when he is standing and moving around than when sitting or lying down. The heating pad seems to help. He often starts the day with less pain and as the day progresses it becomes more painful.
